BOSTON — The state pharmacy board ordered Wal-Mart on Tuesday to stock emergency contraception pills at its stores in Massachusetts.

Massachusetts becomes second state to require the world's largest retailer to carry the morning-after pill.

A Wal-Mart spokesman said the company would comply with the directive by the Massachusetts Board of Pharmacy and is reviewing its nationwide policy on the drug.

"Clearly women's health is a high priority for Wal-Mart," spokesman Dan Fogleman said. "We are actively thinking through the issue."

Wal-Mart now carries the pill only in Illinois, where it is required to do so under state law. The company has said it "chooses not to carry many products for business reasons," but has refused to elaborate.

The unanimous decision by the pharmacy board comes two weeks after three women, backed by abortion rights groups, sued Bentonville, Ark.-based Wal-Mart for failing to carry the drug in its 44 Wal-Marts and four Sam's Club stores in Massachusetts.

The women had argued that state policy requires pharmacies to provide all "commonly prescribed medicines."

When i look at the health risks associated w/any contraception, all to treat a normal and healthy condition, I always wonder, what's wrong w/chastity and NFP? It's free, mostly, contains no regrets, no harmful side effects, no carcinogens, is enviornmental and carries a lot of love with it.

E/C doesn't even get to the heart of the problem when it comes to cases like rape.

Because people mistakenly don't think that abstaining from sex can be a loving action...they think that love is to "do it like they do on the discovery channel."

I understand why Walmart is complying, only, what the hell are they going to do if they said "nope". I'm sorry, but you can't hurt walmart.

i think there might be more to it than just this MA board of whatever. In politics there usually is. If state boards all of sudden see walmart and uncompliant, they might be tempted to make all kinds of regulations against it. (basically to get money to line their own pockets through lawsuits) It wouldn't make business sense.

I do not like what our nation is coming to.

Natural law prohibits compliance in this case. The matter is written on their hearts.

[quote name='jezic' date='Feb 15 2006, 11:40 AM']it should, but remember, this is America and in our time people don't always do what natural law says. (stating the obvious)

Doesn't matter. The natural law outranks civil law. Walmart has the moral obligation to disregard what the court said in this instance.

It amazes me how much power government wields over private businesses these day. We are really little different than the Communist Chinese system of things. Shall we now force home depot to stock twinkies because someone might come to their store starving and find only power toolls? It's silly. Oh wait they should be forced to open a pharmacy with contraceptives as well. :ohno:

Sad that Walmart is caving so easily.

i completely agree with you. It shouldn't matter, but it isn't our society. I wish it was, but it isn't. They are a business and will comply because otherwise it is bad for them (even if it is only like a mosquito bite).

Okay, but then they shouldn't be carrying condoms, birth control pills, spermicides, etc. either.

That would be great!! But unfortunately, it isn't going to happen. WE need to help more people learn about NFP. Chad and I do marriage prep talks and teach it to anyone who is listening. THAT is how the world is slowly going to come around - through education.

I think they should even teach about the Billings Method in highschool.

Coming to? It's already there.. . .this nation is, sadly, way past 'coming to'. :(
