Reconcile this with tradition, with the G.I.R.M., Redemptoris Sacramentum, even Vatican II's documents. Cam, Brother Adam, anybody? Brother Adam
I'm trying to figure out just what the circuis mass was? Was it simply a mass where they prayed for the intentions of the circus? Was the ONLY abnormality the vestments? I think the idea of a Catholic circus is cool. Entertain little kids and teach them the Catholic faith. The vestments on the right look a little hokey, but the three on the left don't look all that bad. If they simply prayed a mass for the intentions of those Catholics who are members of the circus as a job, I don't see a problem, but I defer to Cam as he is the expert. Ash Wednesday
I know that a vast majority of circus performers in the United States are Catholic and the church started a ministry to provide the sacraments for them because they travel a lot. It looks to me like it's a regular mass in a church.... With the exception of the vestments. *twitch* http://www.vatican.va/roman_curia/pontific...ctioncircus.htm
Thy Geekdom Come
If they're brave enough to wear those outfits, I don't think you'll convince them otherwise. They look funny, at least.

Brother Adam
That link doesn't work. Are there any rules about the images on vestments?
Ash Wednesday
I fixed the link.. http://www.vatican.va/roman_curia/pontific...ctioncircus.htm They don't discuss vestments --the document is about the International Congress for the Pastoral Care of Circus and Travelling Show People. I think Cam would probably know about the vestments.

thessalonian
I don't see a problem myself. People in the circus need the mass. So the vestments are a bit wild. I went to a confirmation Mass in which Bishop Kinney presided on Sunday. I was sponsor for my nephew. He gave a beautiful, very orthodox homily on the sacrements and his whole demeanor was the most reverent I've seen in a long time. I was very impressed. It was a great service. Ash Wednesday
Nurses uniforms!!!! I could die laughing!!!! Don't know if this is relevant: http://www.ewtn.com/expert/answers/sacred_vessels.htm I guess they felt their vestments were dignified and not unbecoming and evoke sacred use? I don't think they did anything intentionally wrong. Poor taste, in my opinion, yes.
Vestments In the matter of vestments the 2002 GIRM states, 343. In addition to the traditional materials, natural fabrics proper to each region may be used for making sacred vestments; artificial fabrics that are in keeping with the dignity of the sacred action and the person wearing them may also be used. The Conference of Bishops will be the judge in this matter. 344. It is fitting that the beauty and nobility of each vestment derive not from abundance of overly lavish ornamentation, but rather from the material that is used and from the design. Ornamentation on vestments should, moreover, consist of figures, that is, of images or symbols, that evoke sacred use, avoiding thereby anything unbecoming.
