Harry Potter is better than LOTR....sorry I just had to say it. Has LOTR gotten millions and millions of kids to start reading again? Not exactly. It's a great movie but not at all as good as Harry Potter.

I refuse to read the HP books. I think they're dumb. Though, admittedly, I am a sucker for a movie and I've seen all the HP movies.

Anyway, I would bet money on Harry not dying. Raphael's theory is interesting. I definitely think Snape is good.

Sorry, must ask for clarification of this. Harry Potter books have gotten "millions and millions of kids to start reading again"? I'm going to go out on a limb and say... I doubt it. Perhaps millions and millions of kids are reading HP books. But to classify all of them as non-readers who suddenly picked up HP and became readers? Highly unlikely. I'm going to even suggest that the majority of the HP readers already enjoyed reading to begin with.

I don't terribly enjoy reading...I'm much more of a movie buff (reading takes too long for my attention span--oh, let's go ride bicycles!--and I'm a slow reader to boot). I like reading HP and it certainly made me read HP more...but other books? Nah, not really.

I don't deny that there are people like you, but I don't think there are millions and millions like you...

Does the writing in Harry Potter surpass that of LOTR? Doubt it. Does the history, character development and depth of feeling in Harry Potter compare to LOTR? Doubt it. Has Harry Potter been acclaimed as the greatest work of fantasy in it's century? That would be a no. Harry Potter is good entertainment, but that's as far as it goes. No comparison.

I will be surprised if these books continue to make an impact after 20 years.

And as an aside, LOTR was a book first and foremost, WAY before Harry Potter was even a whisper of a thought in Rowling's mind, so I find it funny that you seem to be comparing the HP books with the LOTR movies...have you even read the books? :idontknow:

No, actually, I was agreeing with you, just from a different side. I think the books made millions and millions read...Harry Potter. I don't think it turned them into generally avid readers.

I really would not be in this thread if I hadnt read both books. Every is entitled to thier own opinion I guess? I'm actually a big fan of both, I'm pretty sure I've talked about LOTR alot on Phatmass. I just happen to think Harry Potter is better........shoot me! :saint:

Weasley parents die. Hermione suffers the loss of an eye and both legs. Ron is committed to an institution. Harry falls off a cliff. Those are my predictions.
