Is Ranting A Form Of Gossip?

Thy Geekdom Come

So some people have been driving me nuts lately and I went to a few friends to discuss it with them, you know, to get it out there, get their advice, let them help me carry the cross, etc.

Now I'm scrupulous...is it gossip to rant about how someone is driving you nuts? I wasn't trying to ruin reputations or anything...just trying to get some help.

Yes and no...If you want about something that happened and only about yourself it is ok, but if you mention other people, be careful and watch your tongue.

It also depends heavily, in my opinion, on who you talk to about it. If you talk to a trustworthy person, who (the person you are ranting to) is closer to you than the person you are ranting about, I think that is better.

There is a bible verse in Sirach...
It's goes something like...
It's ok to have many friends be one out of 1,000 should be your counselor. It's so true with trusting people. I found out the hard way, and now I am learning from my mistake.

I often feel the need to rant-- but if I must rant about someone, I try to do it to a third party (ie someone the subject of the rant does not know) so that I'm not ruining their reputation. (Did that make sense?)

There are times when I am honestly concerned about a person and have wanted to get another person's opinion... I would really like the opinion of someone who knows this person, but I am hesitent to discuss people behind their backs. So, I say nothing...

I ranted to Jennie (because she's the closest person to me), even though she knows the third party well, and to my former roommate, who knows the other party, but not well enough for it to cause any trouble, because he understands me very well and can weigh in as a man, and a friend's mother, who doesn't know the third party at all, because she has motherly advice.

I avoided ruining any reputation.

Good. Taking such care, I don't think you could have mortally sinned. Consider mentioning it as venial at your next confession though.

Yeah, let me edit what I said to add.... I do (obviously) rant to HSdad...

By the way, I'm a big fan of a little thing I like to call the "psycho argument" Just me... saying what I would say if I could.

Can't be a mortal sin unless you know it to be...or so the moral theologians tell me.

Yes of course. I thought you were trying to decide if you what you do know about what you did was a sin.

We need to rant, I believe. For me at least, if I keep everything deep within me, it eats at me and I loose control. Ranting is fine if does not ruin anyone's reputation. After you rant about whatever, try to let go of it too. I find that I will start to annoy people if I rant about the same thing over and over.

I hope this helps. I don't think you did anything wrong :)

no, it's not gossip unless you start giving intimate details. Vent! Do you need to use a name?
