I have not had a chance to check out phat's links, but does anyone have the numbers on how much Catholic $$ goes to charity/evangelization compared to art?

I doubt that we have anything but speculative data on that. Bishops manage the finances of their dioceses, so I don't think that information is ever centralized...it would go diocese by diocese.

if you think about it, all that wealth that is put into artwork is being used to glorify God when it could very well be used to glorify men. I mean, a gold crucifix would make a lot of fancy rings or a crown or something. So, that's one way to think about it.

The CFOs of every dicocese in the country meet once a year and come up with some country wide data. I'm not sure about the world though.

If anywhere, I'm guessing it would be in the Catholic Almanac.

93 Phillies, I don't know about your personal situation, but have you ever thought if your personal charism is one of poverty?

Here is a directory of Catholic Worker Houses that you might be able to contact--either to live with them in community, or get involved with them in other ways.

God bless you.

Here's some stats on the Church in the US:
--The Catholic Church in America: Meeting Real Needs in Your Neighborhood

In it you'll find alot of info on the money devoted to elementary/secondary education, colleges and universities, health care and social services, charities, humanitarian aid, affordable housing, and migrant and refugee services. We definitely don't sit around and look at/buy art all day.....

What an amazing job our Church does to help bring about the fullness of the kingdom. Letus not get too comfortable though. We still live in a world where 5,000 people de daily because they did not have enough to eat. Billions live in extreme poverty. We are doing the job well but lets please not consider it a job well done.
