Thy Geekdom Come
Saturday evening vigil, also called anticipatory Mass, is a Mass which anticipates Sunday. In other words, attending this Mass will fulfill your obligation to go to Sunday Mass. This is because, for the Church, Sunday liturgically starts on Saturday evening (we took this from our Jewish roots...the Jewish Sabbath goes from evening to evening, nor morning to morning like our days). The time Sunday liturgically begins has been standardized at 4 pm local time. Its purpose is mostly for those who are too busy or otherwise unable to attend Mass on Sunday. You are certainly welcome to go, but, of course, you wouldn't want to substitute it for a Sunday Mass when you need to be present for RCIA. It would probably be a good idea to speak to your RCIA coordinator to find out what he or she would like you to do, just so you don't miss anything. After you've been welcomed into the Church, of course, you'd be completely welcome at any Mass. Finally, be certain that a Saturday evening Mass counts for Sunday Mass and not just for a Saturday Mass. You'll be able just to ask your priest, but there is a difference because weekday Masses (except on Holy Days) only have one reading and the Gospel and follow a different sequence of readings. God bless, Micah
