HeavenlyCalling
I have a bit of acne too, and nothing is a better dose of humility : , I may try some of those... ... The doctor wouldn't cut you any slack while you were at OLAM? That really shows how much faith your doctor has in you. My doc is a practicing Catholic, so maybe he would let me get by without the birth control...hmmm

veroni213
The program requirement for an FCBP is to be on two effective forms of birth control unless you choose to be abstinent. A patient choosing abstinence does not need to choose another form of birth control, however, a secondary choice of “none” must still be entered if abstinence is listed as the primary form. Abstinence means an FCBP will not have sex or sexual contact with any male 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This could be hard to do especially if the patient is used to having sex. It is easier not to have sex when it is a lifestyle choice, such as a religious practice. One of the most common causes of unplanned pregnancy is not being able to avoid sex (failing to maintain abstinence). Abstinence is not a recommended way to prevent pregnancy for the iPLEDGE Program.
The above is from the I Pledge website under the FAQs for subscribers. I think a lot of doctors are reluctant to prescribe Accutane to abstaining people because there's no way to prove that you really aren't having sex. Talk to your doctor and tell him what a good Catholic you are and see if that changes his mind. : If not, find a new one. The pregnancy/ BC issue aside, Accutane is some pretty strong stuff. I was on it four years ago. I only went through one treatment (under normal circumstances you can do up to two courses) and my skin was perfect for a few months. It went downhill a little after that, but it's still better than it was before. My sister, who had much worse acne than I did, did the double treatment. She also had better results - it really is unbelievable. As much as it helped, there were some nasty consequences. My skin was very dry, my lips were constantly chapped, and I got sunburn so bad I had blisters on my arms after only a half hour in the sun. (To be fair they were small blisters and I usually burn easily anyway, but still.) Also, I had an emergency room visit due to heat exhausation while I was on Accutane. I'm convinced the Accutane played a part in that. Also it's expensive and not all insurance covers it. There's a whole long list of other side effects that I didn't have- vision loss, depression, suicide, etc. Use it as a last resort. edit: FCBP means "female of child bearing potential" Edited January 5, 2007 by TrueImage
awyers
Hey Totus Tuus! I too had realllly bad skin since I was in grade school and took everything known to man. The only thing that ever helped me was Accutane. I have been on it 3 times starting in gr 8 which is the max a person can take it for life apparently. Maybe it is different in Canada but I didnt have to take the pill, I just signed some waiver although the pill can really help skin too. What I use now is Proactiv and I am telling you it works just as well as Accutane! I would really recommend you give it a try if you can. It isnt too expensive and it doesnt dry out my skin like all the other stuff I have taken. I really wonder what I will do without it when I enter SMME but I guess I will just have to let go of these things! I order it online but you may be able to get it in a store. If you do get it just make sure you start off using it at night and build up to twice a day if needed. Good Luck Allison

azaelia
I've had fairly bad acne since puberty and I use Proactiv. Works for me You have to be super diligent about it though...wash your face twice a day no matter what. If I don't wash my face at night I break out. But if you use it regularly it clears up acne pretty well, I think.
Another option- deal with it.
That's extremely rude.

Totus Tuus
I have used Proactiv in the past and it made my acne worse because of excessive drying. I appreciate the suggestion though I looked up the tea tree oil thing, and according to the testimonies I read it seems to help about half of the people who use it, and hinder the other half Keep the suggestions coming guys! This is great advice. I'm liking this thread. I'm going to try some of these things. My skin is super sensitive too so the smallest things make me break out. I'm looking for something that cleans well and will provide nutrition to my skin at the same time.

They are $7 on their website (I started using it at the monastery when another sister gave me a bar). It's like a miracle how awesome this soap works. It's a compound of dead sea salt and minerals, but works like a really smooth soap. Even though it costs more than something on the shelf at Wal-Mart, the bars literally last 5 months even if you wash your face three or four times a day. Check your local drug store (the one in Birmingham sold them but here in my city they don't so I had to go to the website to buy it after I got home): www.ahavaus.com

Emotion
Get Down - Deep-pore clay cleanser. You can buy this at any Origins store in the mall. also try Check and Balances - A forthy face wash, also at Origins. That worked for me. and yes I am a guy, but I live with two sister and mother who are hair stylists and make up artists so I know pretty much everything form what type of hair-color you should get to the best Pedicure tools. so ask me any time. And if that don't work, do what my sister did. and now she is completely clean. What she did was grab a towel and rub her face with it until all her acne started to bleed, washed her face with water and put toothpaste on her face for about an hour. It burned really bad, but after about a week of doing that it started to clear up fantastically. Edited January 6, 2007 by Emotion
