Try the zeno! (sorry I gave the wrong site address!--thanks Trish!)

It is worth a try, it is non-invasive, realatively inexpensive, and might be what you need. They also guarantee it, so if it doesn't work, send it back!

Our dial-up is being really slow... could you tell me how much it is?

 • 3 months later...

Rosula medicated pads from a derm....looove them. Clear skin, woot!

Oh, and Totus Tuus---- zeno is pretty expensive I think at least $100. You can find a ton of info on it from www.acne.org.

Thanks Lena. I just noticed the Zeno in a store, going for $140. Fortunately I decided to go on Accutane. I'm almost done with my one-month waiting period and will start it on May 3 :)

Two friends of mine went on accutane, and one was incredibly successful and one not. The 2nd one became so depressed, it was serious and they had to stop. The 1st one also was pretty depressed during treatment, but came out of it. Keep praying, and stay close to Jesus.

I am afraid of that side-effect, Margaret Clare. My doctor said he has not seen that side-effect but I read that about ten percent of the patients get it. I would like to know what hot stuff has to say about that....

One thing that I have had a lot of success with is Bare Minerals make-up, which not only covers things up pretty well but which in my case has actually stopped my absolutely awful cycle of breakouts. It's very pure organic stuff; their slogan is "make-up so pure, you can sleep in it!" Not that you would want to, if you value the whiteness of your linen.

It's also nice because you can wear it without looking dolled-up or immodest. The color blend is so natural that you really can't tell that you're wearing anything.

Again it might not work for a lot of other people but I thought I would throw it out there as a suggestion :)

The 2nd one I mentioned did already start out with a sort of depression, and didn't really believe in God at that point in her life. For the first one, it only lasted about a month. But the results were incredible! She had really bad acne since she was 15 or so, and now it's totally cleared up, just small traces of scars left, but that's about it. I would say the depression or risk of depression is no question worth it in the long run for most people. It's the acne itself that can make you so depressed in the first place.

I think you'll be happy with that! The side effects do vary (my brother was on it, basically really dry skin/lips and he was moody)....but in the long run, it'll be the most effective.

Oh, and I second the usage of mineral make-up (I use the powder foundation from Joppa)...very nice stuff, all natural.

I use Physicians Formula make-up. It does actually help my acne, as I notice there is a better balance in my skin tone when I wash it off (I use oil-absorbing sheets throughout the day if I have to keep the make-up on all day, but generally I wash it off after a couple of hours). I would like to try the Bare Minerals make-up though. I use mineral salt soap to wash my face (Ahava) and it is awesome... I bet the mineral make-up is, too. I think Physicians formula is mostly minerals, and the big thing is that they don't put talc in their products which clogs the pores. I stopped wearing makeup all together when I first got cystic acne because I thought make-up would make it worse (I was using regular brands, containing talc). I didn't notice an improvement in my skin from stopping the makeup, though. But I do notice an improvement from using talc-free, mineral-based makeup.

lol, this conversation probably sounds so dense to a member of the male sex...

I do appreciate this information, Margaret Clare. I think you're right- a foundation in the Faith will provide the best preventative for the depression becoming very bad. And you're absolutely right when you say that it's the acne which can cause depression in the first place. Personally I know that to be true in my case.
God bless!

Thanks! I'm feeling better about being on this medication now :)

I have a good friend who went on a couple of rounds of accutane ... the only side effect she noticed, aside from general dry skin, was an extreme sensitivity to sun. Just be careful about that ... I've never heard of the depression side effect, though.

I have oily skin, and I used witch hazel with some degree of success. I use plain witch hazel water (from the grocery or drugstore) as an astringent after I wash and before I moisturize. I'm not totally spot-free all of the time, but it has helped. It's mild, but you need to be sure to moisturize.
