Paddington
I'm just trying to get a discussion. It was inspired by 2 posters on a different thread. It came out that one of them liked the movie and the other didn't. But they didn't discuss why. And that got me thinking about this issue. I have 2 questions about the movie. And this is mostly for people who have seen the movie... 1. Is it sinful humor that Ricky Bobby was sooooo stupidly disrespectful while praying to Baby Jesus? To me, it makes more sense that it is not sinful humor, because the main theme of the movie is how stupid Ricky Bobby is. If you disagree, please tell me why. 2. Is the sexual humor in the movie wrong? I think that it is in the favor of the movie that nothing was arousing or glorifying of illicit sex. (My memory could be failing me). BUT I still have the feeling that it could be sinful humor. I don't know what to think and so I would like opinions. Lots and lots of movies have humor like that. electricdisk
In my opinion, both of the instances you cite are certainly sinful humor. The prayer to "baby Jesus" was insulting and blasphemous. All honor and respect were missing. Would you spit on the creator of the universe and laugh? I think not. The sexual humor was also intolerable. I quit watching the movie about 1/2 way through.

Paddington
I got pretty uncomfortable during the prayer thing. Especially because of how it went on and on and on. But, I think it hurts the discussion to compare it to spitting on the Creator. To Ricky Bobby, he was being meritorious. If you would've answered with a dogmatic moral statement, that would've been better.
electricdisk
If you got uncomfortable during the prayer thing.... Your conscience (guided by the holy spirit) was giving you a warning sign. Your first instinct was probably correct.

[/quote] My wife and I are extremely selective in what we watch. We watched Talladega Nights and both loved it. We did skip through a couple of scenes, but the prayer scene was not one of them. I actually thought that parts of the prayer were cute, in a stupid kind of way. I thought it definitely showed just how stupid Ricky Bobby is. I felt that the whole film was a big jab at the culture of NASCAR and that was what made it funny. Some of the sexual stuff we skipped through. Is it sinful? I suppose it could be. Did I find the prayer offensive? No. Should I have? I am not sure. What I do know is that there are very few movies out there that ever even make it into my household, and I would argue that if this movie is sinful to watch then just about any pg and up movie can be argued to be sinful in some manner. Should we even waste our time here on movies? Does it bring any glory whatsoever to lord? I know that after a hard day of work, that is always followed by bringing that work home with me, that my brain just wants to shut off. I enjoy watching a film with my wife and having a glass of wine. Could I use my time more wisely? Yes. It could be argued that anything not done for the greater glory of God is sinful, and I suppose that is the one thing that would should all work towards doing everyday. kujo
I don't think that Ricky Bobby was being disrespectful to Jesus. I don't think his prayer was blasphemous. It was cute and a bit funny. Have you ever read a passage in the Bible and felt that it was humorous? Are we to believe that laughing at something God did or said in Holy Scripture is blasphemous as well? Remember, God has a sense of humor as well. As for the sexual humor, yeah it was probably a bit sinful. That is to say, it was done, in large part, in poor taste. For instance, Ricky Bobby and his assistant making out at the bar, the French guy and his lover being affectionate, Ricky Bobby and the French guy kissing, etc. It wasn't explicit and it wasn't overly-vulgar. It was just overdone and senseless. All that said, it was still a GREAT movie. Definitely one of Will Ferrell's best.
I'm Mr. Snikkers
I like Kicking and Screaming. That was a good Will Ferrell movie.
Ash Wednesday
It's been a while since I've seen that movie but from what I remember, the impression I got was that during the prayer part at the table, his character was being completely sincere -- and at the same time, the man was dumb as rocks -- and I think the whole thing was just meant to emphasize his silly dumbness more than anything of disrespect to God. Will Ferrell plays dumbness so well! Edited February 10, 2007 by Ash Wednesday
Paddington
Thanks for all the replies. I agree with those who say that Ricky Bobby was not trying to be disrespectful. I guess that the most disrespectful comments about Jesus ever are in the Gospels where certain people accuse him of being demonic. As for the comment about the discomfort of my conscience while watching the movie being the guidance of the Holy Spirit......Feelings can agree with the Holy Spirit one minute and disagree with Him the next minute. I try to stay away from the feelings angle for that reason. I really want to think that God laughs at the same things I laugh at. I know that can't possibly be true. But, I'd like it to be MOSTLY true. It is on my mind a lot.
heavenseeker
i love that movie! as far as anything wrong with it goes, i'd say no because its all just parts of a movie that i feel thta by the end of it teaches fair-good morals
isilzha
My friends made me watch it after the super bowl last week. I didn't really think about it too much, but I didn't enjoy the movie all that much.

kujo
I had to supress an audible-laugh a few weeks back during mass when we read the Gospel about Jesus being led to the top of a hill, and then "passing through" the crowds unseen. I just thought to myself "My Lord was a ninja!" As I said, I supressed it...but I sure laughed about it later!
