mroger
you know what? I don't know why i said that I liked Cmotherofpearl's 'oroborous'. Maybe i was really tired, but i swear that i thought i saw a snake eating itself when i looked at her avatar. weird. i guess that is proof enough that people see what they want to see. i love reading about ancient symbols, it's like the fusion of art and philosophy. but ia have no idea what the image of cmamma's avatar is. Pardon me for being short, but, what is it? I read on another thread that someone thinks it is pagan, etc.
Didymus
People can debate whether it was a "horse trade," but basically, yes. Indult Tridentine Masses are allowed in particular parishes (including mine), but pastors are allowed to choose whether or not to allow altar girls in their parish. Our parish does not allow altar girls.
your diocese (if I'm correctly assuming which one) is a great example of a solid brotherhood of priests. Your diocese could have a mahoney walk in and you'd still be solid.
clg01
being able to "see" sisters or nuns in habit is a good way to inspire young women.
True, but in my humble opinion, seeing a sister or nun in a habit if far less frequent than seeing altar servers or priests. In essence, I can count that in my cathedral alone over the past 6 months, I've seen a sister/nun in habit probably less than 30% of my time at nearly all of the liturgical ceremonies/functions. And, this number is much less in my previous parish where none were ever seen.
DemonSlayer
I imagine that's because these days most men don't go to seminary until after college or military. By your mid-20s, the days of being an altar server are a distant memory
Well, that's why it wouldn't work that much, I'm sure becoming a priest would be the furthest thing from the minds of most younger altar servers. Interestingly, my dicocese, which has not had altar girls, has had high numbers of vocations to both the priesthood and to women's religious orders. Socrates
In my personal opinion, this was an order that came from a great pope who was guided by the Holy Spirit. Who are we to try and counter that inspiration? Girls at the altar service are a good way to motivate young women to enter into the religious life or to simply be a motivation in any position they take in life at a devout catholic (single life, marriage, or consecrated). If the male has that motivation by seeing priests and other guys at the altar, I see no reason why the same cannot/ should not be said for girls.
Here's what the document allowing "altar girls" in fact said:
"Such an authorization may not, in any way, exclude men or, in particular, boys from the service of the altar, nor require that priests of the diocese would make use of female altar servers," the congregation said. "Indeed, the obligation to support groups of altar boys will always remain, not least of all due to the well known assistance that such programs have provided since time immemorial in encouraging future priestly vocations," it said.
Female altar servers were never ordered, simply allowed.
