SinginForHim
I know the very basics of Theology, in that it is analyzing a religion in the context of scripture, historical documentation, etc...what else is there? Theology does spark my interest, to the point where I would consider majoring/minoring in it in college. I would just like to gain some more knowledge on it. God Bless! Thy Geekdom Come
I'm moving this so it can get a more broad response from those who study theology but cannot post on the Questions and Answers forum. God bless, Raphael

Fides_et_Ratio
Broadly understood, theology is simply the study of God. Beyond that, we can break theology down into different subgroups: systematic theology, biblical studies, church history, etc. (considering theology from a Catholic perspective). But ultimately, the more simple answer is the best: theology is the study of God.
scardella
Theology as simply the study of God seems like it's oversimplifying. I'd say it's more like the study of God and man's response to God. It comprises The nature and identity of God The nature and identity of man God revealing Himself How man responds to God How God responds to man In Catholic theology courses, that translates to Biblical Studies - Old and New Testament Systematic theology Christology Theology of the Church Church history Morality Sacraments Liturgy classes Christian Anthropology Spirituality and Prayer ---Those seem to be the main things Edited April 3, 2007 by scardella
Guest JeffCR07
I actually agree more with Fides et Ratio than with the above post. Strictly considering the historical origin of the word, as a compound of "theos" and "logos" it is the reason of God, or the science of the divine. Rather than breaking "theology" into a number of sub-categories and then defining it based on those sub-categories, it is much more beneficial to think in terms of the material object and the formal object of theology. The material object of theology is God and divinely revealed truths, while the formal object of theology (the manner in which it is studied) is human reason. Thus, any application of human reasoning towards God or divinely revealed truths is rightly considered theology.
