10-month-old Baby Given Gun Permit

CHICAGO.- Bubba Ludwig cannot walk or talk - but he does have an Illinois firearm permit for his very own 12-gauge shotgun.

The 10-month-old, whose given name is Howard David Ludwig, was issued a firearm owner's identification card after his father, Howard Ludwig, paid the $US5 ($A6) fee and filled out the application, not expecting to actually get one.

The card lists the baby's height (68.6cm), weight (9kg) and has a scribble where the signature should be.

With some exceptions, the cards are required of any Illinois residents purchasing or possessing firearms or ammunition within the state. There are no age restrictions on the cards, an official said.

Illinois State Police oversee the application process. Their purpose, said Lt. Scott Compton, is to keep guns out of the hands of convicted felons, those under an order of protection and those convicted of domestic violence.

"Does a 10-month-old need a FOID card? No, but there are no restrictions under the act regarding age of applicants," he said.

Ludwig, 30, of Chicago, applied for the card after his own father bought Bubba a 12-gauge Beretta shotgun as a gift. The weapon will probably be kept at Ludwig's father's house until the boy is at least 14.

My housemate is having a baby soon so there are lots of baby gifts coming in ... no shotguns yet. Maybe I should bite the bullet and buy him one. Because every child should own a 12-gauge.

I'm an Illinois resident, and I had to wait till I was 18 (21 for handguns)

Delays in getting the FOID card are well known here in IL. What would be ironic would be if it took less time for the kid to get his card than for a lot of the people I know. Then again, I would hope that a background check on a 10-month old would take less time than an adult.

I don't want to gauge the caliber of that pun and what responses it might trigger....

Well, it's good that he has a gun. We wouldn't want him to shoot anyone without a gun... though I've heard it's possible.

Red Knight

The GFW's will go apoplectic when they read that!

I need to buy more guns. Then I can teach the chilluns how to safely handle a loaded weapon.
