Sylvia Browne

I think it is a sin to tell the future when it attempts to deny the sovereignty of God. A lot of people consult fortune-tellers because they are afraid about the future and it's so hard to trust God, Who sometimes seems so silent and doesn't seem to give many clues. They want to know what is going to go wrong so that they can prepare themselves, or to know that everything is going to turn out all right, which is certainly understandable. Saul did this with the Witch of Endor before one of Israel's great battles. This is a sin because we need to trust that God is in charge, that He'll get us through the hard times and will take care of us. It's also dangerous because the Devil loves to use the occult to make us fall, to get us relying on this or that clairvoyant instead of devoting our time to the confident worship of Our Lord.

Of course on an entirely different plane are the prophets. They told Israel about the harsh punishments arising from sin and about the coming of the Messiah. When these prophets "told the future" they were actually calling Israel to a closer life with God, to repent. Same thing with the prophecies Our Lady made at Fatima. Such prophesying of course comes from God and is not sinful at all.

Thanks for the response Maggie. I understand the part about the prophets. I for one do not believe Sylvia is a real prophet. She makes herself her own magesterium and invites everyone to follow her. She redefines God by things similar to eastern religions. She pretty much denies the legitimacy of the bible. She says it was corrupted by the ages and politics, language, etc. Not in my Church! On the other hand, my mom told me once she claimed to have read all of the different kinds of bibles. I turned around and said "so then she will know that the Catholic bible is the true bible" and then commenced telling her about the books Luther threw out.

Sylvia Browne fails the false prophet test of the Bible.

If we were in ISrael she would have already been stoned at the city gate.

I believe she is one of the worse out there, leading people into Satanism, New Age and witchcraft. She is semi-gypsy fortune teller charlatan mixed with actual New Ager-Satanist.

Im sorry your Mom is into her teachings.

Show your MOm these Bible verses...

{I know they are in the Catholic Bible as well}

God forbids conjuring up spirits
Deuteronomy 18:9 (KJV)
"When thou art come into the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not learn to do after the abominations of those nations. (10) There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch. (11) Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer. (12) For all that do these things are an abomination unto the LORD: and because of these abominations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee."

1 Samuel 28 and mediums
In 1 Samuel 28 Saul asks for a woman who is a medium so that he can talk to her. This woman had spoken to a "familiar spirit" on many occasions. She made her living by doing so. This spirit was not the deceased loved one her customer wished to contact, but an evil spirit directed by Satan to imitate the deceased. On this occasion with Saul however, God allowed the actual spirit of Samuel to be contacted. This had never happened before (she expected the same deceiving spirit she had always seen) and the medium "cried with a loud voice" (verse 12).
God used this instance to show both his power and presence to the medium revealing himself as the one true God. He also used it to send a message of condemnation to Saul.

The first book of Samuel refers to communication with the deceased, but it is forbidden by God (read Deuteronomy 18:9 above).

Thanks for the help there, Budge. Most appreciated. When I was browsing the google search for "Sylvia Browne Fake", I came across a website that was full of KJV Bible quotes and stuff against her. It was pretty thorough. The author failed to mention Deuteronomy and 1 Samuel. So again, thanks. :)

Parents of a missing child came on Montel and asked Sylvia for help. She told them the boy was dead and there was nothing they could do for him. Can you imagine how that mother must have felt hearing that. I think within the last year or so they found the kid alive and well, thank God.

Yes, that was one of the main arguments against this woman. I heard she wanted to charge these people vast amounts of money an hour to help find the body

:smokey: I really don't think much of her. There are psychics who work with the police like Dorothy Allison, who has been on the old tv show,Unsolved Mysteries and other such people.Sometimes the police themselves contact some of these psychics when they
are really desperate about a case. These people truly do want to help officials, especially in the case of children.
I've seen like on Psychic Detective on Court TV and other shows were the police were secptics of course, but the information
they were given by the psychic they are working with does prove of value and does help them solve the case.
Do'nt know if it's a gift from God or the devil, but at least some of these people are sincere and trying to help.
Sylvia Brown must be Montell's personal psychic, since she's on there so much.

Thanks for the quotes Budge.By the way,it was The Witch of Endor that Saul visited with.

If you're referring to Shawn Hornbeck, I already mentioned him in this thread.

 • 1 year later...

i read part of her book in meijers one day. it was interesting but it was clearly new age garbage. she had stuff about the catholic church as well as other religoins. she basically is led by the spirit of the antichrist which is the one world religion that this generation may see. she doesnt believe in hell or a devil and although she believes in jesus she doesnt believe he died on the cross. she states in the book that she is christain and has her own church. scary stuff. :sadder:

Well, since you went to the trouble of resurrecting this old thread....
;)

Browne is a charlatan of the highest order.
What's more insidious than her phony prophetic/psychic tripe and farcical books is the claims she makes in one or both of her books about her version of God. She says that among the plethora of religions she joined that she was baptised Catholic. In explaining how she was protected by the Church as a mystical person she claims she was told by a Jesuit that she was a a prophet and as a teacher at a Catholic school introduced her students to wicca and such.
People who make these kinds of "predictions" are very clever. The person asking for answers usually GIVES the answers without even knowing it! There was someone on TV a good while back who explained it in detail but I can't remember it all. It had something to do with the clairivoyant using letters of common first names and letting the person supply the family member's name. Also it's not hard to pull out a couple of common diseases and again let the person supply the answers. And on and on. They can also make broad predictions [like with money] that can apply to many people instead of just one particular person. Next time, watch how clever they do these things.

Anyway, these people are also fooling with darkness, something thatopens their souls up to an evil.
Sounds a lot like John Edwards and that lame "Crossing Over" junk he used to peddle. My mom insisted on watching him way back when and I told her I didn't believe what he said (still don't) but she wouldn't listen. Now that I know my Catechism, I was able to show her that clairvoyants are not in line with the Church, and she understands. If only I could show my aunt... She once had her aura read. Geez, the things people buy into...

At least Sylvia Browne doesn't claim to still be a Catholic, John Edwards does, at least the last time I bothered to read anything about him.
