I heard about that! anywho, my brother plays with lightweight linux like puppylinux. personally, i'm okay with a bigger distro like ubuntu. question, though. I couldn't get a newer version of a windows product (Finale Notepad 2010) installed on the boot. I had WINE installed. Is it because I was low on RAM? It would just show a splash screen, then stop. Must be... but I don't know if I want to go splicing my hard drive space to put on Xubuntu... hmm... I do want to migrate over there now that stuff that wasn't working right before is finally fixed :P

Try this. Open up a console, and run the program from within the console window. You should get a bunch of debug output. Then, post that debug output here and I'll let you know what's what. You can post by using this function:
[codebox]
All of your debug code goes here.
[/codebox]
Also, you should check out Frescobaldi. It's a free music notation program for Linux that runs natively. Looks like you can edit your score using both WYSIWYG (easier) and code entry (better for more repetitive stuff).

I don't think i'm gonna read all that. Linux is great. but you're sounding like a mac cultist only trying to sell linux. i think Linux is great i think mac os x is great i also think windows 7 is great. I'll tell you one thing though: nobody can drag me in to any of these cult mac pc or linux. i'll stick to dual booting linux and windows. and i can't afford to own a mac so just those 2 for now.

Ohh, low blow callin me a "Mac Cultist" lol, I can get very verbose in my descriptions though! I also use windows, running Windows 7 right now and using Ubuntu too on dual boot, the only thing I am having problems with in Linux is the web camera on my laptop, but I do not use it anyway, though it would be nice to have it working. Rest easy I would never try to sell Linux, the competition would wipe me out as its free. I like to fiddle with my computer and its not that hard to get things done when you need to, I always have something I need to fix on windows too, I just got a Brother all in one machine and the software was for xp and 2000 and would not install on windows 7, I had to download and install it from the brother site, I got the Linux driver too, it downloaded in about a third the time on firefox, the install was a little more manual, had to open a command line and type a few words in it to start rpm, but it seemed easier to me.

You know, selling computers now for Best Buy, one thing that I've noticed is that while PCs do tend to be cheaper, they also don't come with ANY software. Macs tend to come with quite a bit. I kinda wonder what the rundown is like (though, I'm a Linux nerd myself).

Nice. This is new. I have only seen another front end to lilypond, and it was pretty basic. I'll go ahead and install xubuntu soon. I'll dump the error code and we can talk shop. How would I gather that error? I just get a wine window come up after a few minutes saying it crashed (after the finale splash screen, then, nothing. Personally, I really do think it's because I was running off RAM and had no room left. I was able to get earlier versions of Finale up, but couldn't configure the midi output because it wasn't in the actual program. they were only about 40 mb each...)

If you open up a console or terminal window, and start the program with WINE from within that window, all of the debug output will appear within the terminal. So, instead of starting it from the start menu, or entering the command into the run dialog that pops up when you hit Alt-F2, if you start it from within the console, you get the debug output in that console.

Very very handy trick for figuring out what's going wrong with a program. Definitely commit it to memory. You'd be surprised what you can solve with only a passing understanding of Linux and the command line.

Command line is  to me. I wish Windows was that comprehensive with its terminal! I also wish I understand it more! Anywho, I suppose I'll install it nao...

That's the way it is for everyone at first. You learn by bits a pieces, and you never truly know it all. You seem like the kind of guy that likes a challenge, and likes to learn. So don't sweat it.

I'll get in on it for sure! I'm willing to try again now that more work is done on the OS and it covers my specs. I found some old solutions on line, but imho, I like to work on problems that don't include basic functionality of the computer. That's waay above my pay grade. :P I'll try and debug software. That's fun! :P I think I liken the idea of the OS just working off the bat to a house with four walls and a roof. The fun is filling the inside, not repairing the outside leaks. I am able to do the inside stuff, but I'm not skilled to fix the exterior problems. Okay, babble over. Will fill you in on the WINE stuff when I get bookmarks and a few other things migrated.

Okay. I really wanna try Frescobaldi. I got the tar.gz file for it, but I forget the command to install it. Apparently lilypond comes with ubuntu, so I'm fine. Also, the instructions say I'll need some KDE framework? Couldn't find that on the kde site. Okay, noob needs help!

All you need to do:

Open up a console, and type
sudo apt-get install frescobaldi
That will pull in all of the necessary KDE framework, install it, and then install frescobaldi. As Frescobaldi himself would say, "Finito!"
