Padre Pio, Italy's most-loved saint, faked his stigmata by pouring carbolic acid on his hands, according to a new book.

The Other Christ: Padre Pio and 19th Century Italy, by the historian Sergio Luzzatto, draws on a document found in the Vatican's archive.

The document reveals the testimony of a pharmacist who said that the young Padre Pio bought four grams of carbolic acid in 1919.

"I was an admirer of Padre Pio and I met him for the first time on 31 July 1919," wrote Maria De Vito.

She claimed to have spent a month with the priest in the southern town of San Giovanni Rotondo, seeing him often.

"Padre Pio called me to him in complete secrecy and telling me not to tell his fellow brothers, he gave me personally an empty bottle, and asked if I would act as a chauffeur to transport it back from Foggia to San Giovanni Rotondo with four grams of pure carbolic acid.

"He explained that the acid was for disinfecting syringes for injections. He also asked for other things, such as Valda pastilles."

The testimony was originally presented to the Vatican by the Archbishop of Manfredonia, Pasquale Gagliardi, as proof that Padre Pio caused his own stigmata with acid.

It was examined by the Holy See during the beatification process of Padre Pio and apparently dismissed.

Padre Pio, whose real name was Francesco Forgione, died in 1968. He was made a saint in 2002. A recent survey in Italy showed that more people prayed to him than to Jesus or the Virgin Mary. He exhibited stigmata throughout his life, starting in 1911.

The new allegations were greeted with an instant dismissal from his supporters. The Catholic Anti-Defamation League said Mr Luzzatto was a liar and was "spreading anti-Catholic libels".

Pietro Siffi, the president of the League, said: "We would like to remind Mr Luzzatto that according to Catholic doctrine, canonisation carries with it papal infallibility.

"We would like to suggest to Mr Luzzatto that he dedicates his energies to studying religion properly."

Thy Geekdom Come

Pffft. St. Padre Pio could've told him he'd make up this lie. :P

Like God would give the odor of sanctity, bilocution, heart-reading, prophecy, and the ability to speak with his guardian angel to a man who faked the stigmata...

Yeah, that is an old one. It shows up in Ruffin's biography of St. Pio as well. Ruffin's books is very well balanced and it's garbage to think he faked that.

Peace,

Fr. P

Luzzatto is a God hating moron... people who where not Catholic and had him under observation for weeks on end never witnessed anything.

I would love to debate that guy... one question I would love to ask him... "How does that explain why the wounds healed three days after he died?"

or better yet....

"Oh, he could have, then came back three days after he died and performed plastic surgery on the wounds so people would think they healed."

Hmmm.... How did he know exactly why everyone came to confess to him? At least that is what the more than five thousand people attested to... why they waited in line for hours on end to go to confession with St. Pio.

It's sad and so frustrating when people totally ingore facts and go by what they want instead of what is truth.

God Bless,

I really wish people would not say that so-and-so was "made a saint" ... :ohno:

Just reinforces the misconception about the Church

People will do anything to escape the fact that God exists and is stronger than man. Even make things up which totally contradict science.
maybe he did? who knows - if he is a saint its because of a life lived for God in love and purity - not for stigmata ... duh
Right, but Padre Pio is one of those saints who was tested by scientists and proven not to be faking - not proven by the CHURCH, but by bona fide scientists :)

But yeah, I totally agree that he isn't a saint because of his stigmata. He wouldn't have been a saint had he been faking it, though. (I hope it doesn't sound authoritative of me to be saying that, but seriously, people don't get canonized when they spend their lives lying to draw attention to themselves.)

The education director at my church said it best. He said that the Church is the most skeptical entity out there. She has all sorts of scientists and athiests on boards. When the Church calls something a miracle, you can be rest assured there is no other possible explanation for it.

When I first saw the title of this thread my first thought was that someone returned from vacation, if you get what I mean....
and i wish they wouldnt say that saints are prayed to, especially "more than Jesus"
I agree with this sentiment. No saint can be prayed to in the same manner as we are bound to pray to Our Redeemer, Jesus Christ.
