The Official Phatmass Marriage Preparation Thread

Well, Since Miss Scripture is soon to be a Mrs, as am I, and there are several other Phamily members out there preparing for marriage right now, I thought this would be as good a time as any to start another "Official" thread. Here's a place were we can chat about all the inane things that would drive the rest of our wonderful Pham nuts! Like NFP, marriage prep classes, priests and coordinations of all the wonderful wedding day and post wedding day things. A couple of things have already come to mind for Joey and I, so I'd love the input of my wonderful family.

To start with, I'm from Virginia, Joey's from Colorado. Joey lived in VA for 3 years and that's how we met. I'm living in Colorado now- I've been here since August. So Where on EARTH should this wedding be?! Some more background- My family is not Catholic at all and they live in the middle of nowhere. The church there is beautiful and itty bitty, but absolutely nobody in my family will be presenting themselves for Communion. Joey's family is half Catholic- his dad and little sister are, his Older brother is fallen away, but his Mom and Older sister are not Catholic. Joey has an adopted family out here who are wonderful and devout Catholics, but they are just good close friends. The church we attend out here is a big BEAUTIFUL cathedral-type (looking, not actual) church run by the Oblates of the Virgin Mary, who are sweet, sweet priests. Both our spiritual directors are OMVs and we LOVE this church.

The wedding will HAVE to be in one or the other states. If it's here, then we'll have a beautiful wedding in a beautiful church with space for a reception, and we won't have to worry about traveling for our own wedding. However, that means my family will- and we're not the richest of families by any means. Also, it's tradition to have the wedding at the woman's home parish. While technically the church at home isn't my Home parish (since i wasn't raised Catholic), it is the parish near my home.

If the wedding in in Virginia, we'll have a beautiful wedding in a beautiful (though tiny and simple) church- a completely different feel from Denver, but just as nice. Space will be limited, but that's fine by me and Joey- we don't want a huge wedding. We will have to travel, as will priests and other wedding party members, and there aren't very many accommodations nearby (although my family, I'm sure, could turn their big house into a hostile no problem- we just need lots and lots of cots). There's not very much room for a reception, unless we do it at my parent's farm, or find someplace in the town half an hour away. However, this would be more traditional, it would allow my family to attend a mass (always good) with no travel issues, and would allow for more of our mutual friends whom we know through the 3 years Joey was out in Virginia with me to attend.

Both are in great Diocese (Arlington and Denver). Both have great priests whom we have good connections with (the priest in Virginia remembered us and where we moved at Christmas even though I hardly ever went to Mass there!)

Obviously this is an issue that Joey and I need to work out amongst ourselves mainly, but all input is greatly appreciated.

And since this is the "official" thread, I guess I should say... 1...2....3.... GO!

Actually it would be far more appropriate to let us decide which state you're married in.

So far, Arkansas is in the lead with one vote

Well, my sister is getting married in June... that maybe sort of counts. We just picked the cake and flower companies over Christmas break, and ordered the bridesmaid dresses (she already has her dress, no alterations needed!), and my other sister and I are working on bridal shower plans! yay!!

I would say, go with Colorado. It sounds more convenient (ie- you will already be there! ordering flowers and picking catering companies and anything like that would be hard from far away!), and like less people would have to travel so much. And it sounded a bit like you would rather do that as well.

Can we at least spell it correctly? P R E P A R A T I O N.

Honestly, it's embarrassing sometimes to see the basic spelling errors that are viewed on the homepage of phatmass because of the phorums.

Aside from that, sounds like a fun idea for a thread!

By any chance, is one of these priests you're talking about Fr. Jeremy? He was at my parish out here in California until this summer when he was transferred out to Denver. I've heard he's grown a mountain-man beard of late.

Anyway, though, congratulations :)

Ash Wednesday

CRIZZAP! Stupid phatamass message board server didn't let me post properly. :annoyed:

Um, yeah I welcome this thread with opens arms since I'm getting married internationally so I understand the complications there. But I vote for colorado. :)

My fiance and I are marrying in England because it's where we will be starting out but having additional receptions in the U.S. and Europe so our loved ones can be part of it and stuff.

I'm going to start taking NFP classes from a couple locally near where I live.

omgicantbelieveimgettingmarried....*spaz
es out* I spent this evening at my home parish showing off my engagement bling to my fellow parishioners I've known forever. *spazzes out again*
