I work in a parish now and often hear couples wanting to make the ceremony quicker! Make it as long as possible! The Sacrament is amazing and so often it's abused! Just smile if things don't go as planned tomorrow, in the long run it doesn't matter what happens or what people think. This is about you and your beloved, it's about the Sacrament! CatherineM
I wore vintage Nike running shoes under my gown. I had to have something blue afterall. I didn't trip on my gown, but I kept sitting on the sleeves. It had these kind of Lord of the Rings style sleeves with and inner and outer sleeve. The outer one was long in the back, and everytime I sat down at the reception, I sat on at least one of them.
MissScripture
hehe I don't miss wedding planning at all. Between 40 hrs of work a week, 18 credit hours of school a week, writing a Thesis, and being 1,200+ miles from the place of the wedding during all the planning, I don't miss it at all. I did the majority of the planning alone. Micah helped with the liturgy and music, but the rest was pretty much all me from ordering the cake, food, decorations, decorating lol, and housing rofl It was nuts. But the Church was beautiful during the Christmas season. The craziness all melted away that day though. All the stress went away when I put on my dress, I had been freaking out before I put it on. It didn't go perfectly lol Micah picked up his ring to give to me instead of picking up my ring to give to me lol He stepped on my train a few times lol Fr. Pike almost forgot to take Communion, himself. My mom was late ROFL, but we didn't start without her! All in all it was actually perfect, at least I see it that way. Bridesmaids processional was Bach's Sleepers Awake Bride's processional was Ave Maria (which Clara, jyoung (sp?) from phatmass sung beautifully Communion hymn was Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence lol I forget the other songs lol
So, the joke before my brother's wedding was "you can still get out," with the bride's grandfather going so far as to handing my brother his car keys and saying, "The gas tank is full..." Well, the wedding starts, my brother is standing at the front of the church waiting for the procession in...and nothing happens. After a minute of standing around awkwardly, the priest walked out and came back in, saying, "Don't worry, they're coming." The music continues, and after another minute the priest is about to go out again, when you see the bridesmaids timidly coming in, and he kind of motions them to come in. Then, later, they got confused with the rings, about which hand they were supposed to go on, and missed what the priest was saying and had to ask him to repeat it. THEN, to top it all off, at the end, the priest forgot the bride's name, and said, "I now present to you John and...his wife!" But it was a very nice wedding, those things just make it memorable! Oh, and the night before the wedding, my sil lost one of her bridesmaids in the airport. She was flying in from the Netherlands, and the bride's uncle was supposed to pick her up. He couldn't find her, and she had no idea what he looked like and she wasn't answering her phone. And the bride kept calling the airlines, but she could never get to talk to a real person. But they found her and she actually made it to the rehearsal!
Thy Geekdom Come
StColette typing My grandfather was actually notorious in our family for kidnapping brides in our fam. lol He kidnapped several of my cousins to make sure they knew what they were getting themselves into. Yes, he would kidnap them on the day of their wedding. lol He brought all of them back in time for the weddings though. Sadly, he died a year before my high school graduation. I actually would have found it quite funny to get kidnapped by him. He was such a great man. He was the only one at my Confirmation, because the rest of the family was sick. He died about a few weeks later, so my Confirmation is extra special to me.
CoffeeCatholic
wow- I need to get back on phatmass more often. I miss my Phamily! Lots of stuff is going on now that we're only 7.5 months away. However, one thing that's not happening is any sewing. Long story short, I'm not going to be able to sew my dress (at least not entirely- I'll probably still do some alterations and embellishments if i can). However, I'm having a crazy hard time finding a dress!!!! I'm so picky. And the sleeves is the toughest part. I swear, society just wants us to go naked at the wedding and pay $1000 for someone to sell us on it. Anyway, any suggestions on where to find an appropriate dress- especially for a January wedding! Modesty aside (although that is my main concern) who wants to get married in a strapless gown in January in Denver?!?! Ridiculous!

My daddy brought the rosary that was Grandpa's, so he was "there." My dad almost didn't make it to the wedding, though. He got really sick three or four days before, and couldn't go to the rehearsal dinner. I was in charge of driving him, everywhere, so he didn't have to sit around anywhere and he could rest. He actually did make it through the entire recpetion, though...although that was also due to the fact that it ended early, because the sound system got messed up... My dad has really severe back problems. He broke is back in five places when he was 29. A crane's chain broke and a steel beam fell on my dad's right shoulder. He came very close to dying. I was only 2 at the time of the accident, so some of my first memories are visiting my dad in the ICU. Anyway, since then he, naturally, has had really severe back pain that makes him almost not able to walk some days. His doctors were actually trying to have him undergo more back surgery right before the wedding. My dad explained to him that his baby girl was getting wedding and that he had to walk me down the aisle. So they gave him a bunch of steriod shots in the back so he could make it through until after the wedding. He was in such pain even then that he didn't attend the rehearsal dinner. He made it through the entire wedding ceremony, but by the time of the reception he had to go home because his back felt so bad. So my father daughter dance was me and one my good guy friends, practically a little brother, from FUS. It was really cute. I would have loved dancing with my dad, but I completely understood the situation and still had a wonderful time.
CatherineM
My father had been dead for almost 20 years when we married, so my father in law walked me down the aisle. He said it was the least he could do for a fallen comrade.

Our priest chanted most of it (his normal Sunday Mass is nearly 1.5 hours, so I knew the nuptial Mass would be long. ). It was simply gorgeous. One of my friends said when she was planning her wedding, the minister kept bringing up ways to shorten it (it was a Protestant wedding), and she kept saying she wanted it longer. I think she talked him up to 30-40 minutes (which is quite short, in my opinion). And it listed what each did better. For weddings Catholics won, and it said, "Some Catholic weddings last longer than Lutheran marriages!"

Sarah_JC
Sorry, but, hijack... I'm going to make myself a blue dress, and sell the ivory one. I know it's a stupid small difference, but I've has no peace about it. I have some strange pressing need to wear blue. I worried I was disappointing my mother. I know I'm going to shock a few people, but I hope I don't scandalize. It's not because I'm not a virgin. Blue being the colour most closely associated with Mary in modern times, and being the medieval colour of virginity and faithfulness, I can't resist this. Also, because I like dressing up in medieval clothes, I can wear it again. Here's the dress: http://www.butterick.com/item/B4827.htm?ta...umes&page=2 Picture it blue over ivory. Support? Warnings? Suggestions for how to deal with questions? God bless, Sarah
CatherineM
As to questions, just tell them that you wanted to be able to enjoy your gown, and relive the moment to much to make it a traditional dress you could only wear once. Here's the gown I sewed: gown As to the sewing itself, if you are using a professional, Butterick is fine. If you are planning to sew it yourself, and don't have a lot of sewing experience, Butterick can be difficult. Use a cheap fabric to cut the whole thing out first. I think it will be beautiful. I have worn my again to Rideau Hall, and didn't feel bad at all.

As for questions, simply explain that blue is the colour of virginity & faithfulness, and talk about its association with Mary; I think people will understand. And if your father is like mine, he'll appreciate you having a dress you can wear again. I certainly don't think it will scandalize if you explain what the colour blue symbolizes, though. If your worried it may scandalize or upset some people, you could always put a little "reflection" or something about it in the wedding program, so there is no major upset.
