The youngest pope was John XII, who was eighteen when he was elected. Some sources claim the youngest pope was Benedict IX (1032 A.D.), elected at age twelve.

Possibly the most athletic Pope in history, John Paul II in his youth played soccer as a goalie, took daring swims in the flooded Swaka River, and enjoyed skiing, hiking, mountain climbing and kayaking.

I also read in the New World in a column that he played goalie in hockey as well.

Yes he did!

The story goes that when someone commented on the cost of the pool, Pope Jean-Paul II told him that 'Another conclave would cost more than a pool'!
(if you recall, there already had been two conclaves in a very short period of time)

what happens to a pope who retires? he gets exiled until he dies, or at least Celestine V did... i somehow dont think that happens anymore...
