Madame Vengier
We have a large Chinese community here, and on the news last night, they had people talking about calling their family members, and remembrances of the 1976 quake that killed a quarter of a million. One man commented that he was shocked at how much access China is letting to both aid workers and media in this crisis. I guess they haven't in the past. I wonder if the Tibet protests have taught them something, or maybe seeing how Burma is being viewed right now has allowed them to see themselves through others eyes for the first time.
I just think the gov't is on their very best behavior b/c of the Olympics. They know the whole world is watching Beijing right now. That's my personal opinion.
cappie
Chinese rescue teams have reached the epicentre of Monday's devastating earthquake, Wenchuan county, where an estimated 60,000 people remain missing. A few hundred soldiers and police finally made it through late on Tuesday after being hampered by broken roads and bad weather. They found 500 bodies within a few hours - but have still not searched many devastated areas. The official death toll is more than 12,000, and looks set to rise sharply. Thirty Chinese troops in the town of Yingxiu, in Wenchuan, rescued 300 injured residents, state news agency Xinhua said. In one city, Mianyang, 18,000 people are said to be buried under the rubble, and in nearby Mianzhu, at least 4,800 are reported trapped.
