The Mayans thought so. I don't think it will be the end of the world, but I sure think the world will look much different. I think that may be the year the sea ice in the Arctic clears in the summer and opens the NW passage.

I don't see anyone who seems to fit the Biblical figure of the Anti-Christ. Unless I see something along those lines, I don't think there's any cause for speculation.

It is already 2012 (it will be 2013 tomorrow) if one remembers that Christ was actually born between 4 to 6 BC.

It would be the same year.

well, what I'm more worried about is all the looney toons who actually believe in the mayan calendar, nostradamus, and the rest. What the ignorant masses will do is what concerns me not really anything having to do with the end times.

Honestly I haven't studied escatology that much anyway. I think that the gospels make it pretty clear that we cannot know the exact time and date of the second coming/bowls of wrath/beast/anti-christ/four horsemen/etc. Besides, whether all of that happens to begin tomorrow or twenty years from now my behavior should remain the same; "running with endurance the race marked out for me". I'll get to it eventually, but for now being a new convert about to enter the Church officially I'd rather focus on getting my friends and family to enter the Church than try to figure out when the world will end.

correct me if I'm wrong

haha however, that means that the Mayans projected 2016 as their date projection wasn't based on the birth of Christ ;)

So then the Islamic year isin't really 1430? Saince the migration wasn't actually in 622 but actully 626? So it's really 1434, which means Michelangelo will be born in 41 years.

So St Peter's Basilica isin't painted yet?

I'll tell my dad to put that pilgrimage to Rome he's planning for me on hold for a while. Won't be any fun with a bare St. Peter's Basilica.

But honestly... just because their calendar ended... couldn't they just have thought "well, we can go on for 800 years on this one, let them worry about a new calendar then, we're going to party!"

I would have.

The Mayan calendar, like many other things associated with that ancient culture, is historically interesting, while being eschatologically irrelevant.
