CatherineM
Things only get onto Carfax if an insurance payment was made. If the car wasn't insured, or was self-insured, like a rental car, there won't be a paper trail.

Look up stuff on Consumer reports on gas mileage, company recalls, repair record, etc. Here's one site I like to use because it's free, but it's not as comprehensive as Consumer Reports. Take a male relative that is familiar with cars. I know this sounds sexist but seriously I've seen how salespeople act toward women buying cars or expensive items. They will try to smell of elderberries you dry. I have had salesmen treat me like I was some type of idiot when buying electronics. lol They had no idea that I had been working for an electronics company for a few years and was certified in 70 different areas of electronis. My dad did my shopping for me when I got my truck. I told him what I would like. He had several dealerships bidding against one another and by the time he got finished with them we paid way under the ticket price for a brand new truck, this was back in 2001. lol He also managed to have them switch the rims for some that were better for no extra charge, double scotch guard the interior, and fix a few scratches in the paint. So bring a guy, it works.
Yea I can believe it! Find a trustworthy used car dealer out in the country somewhere. Buy a car that an old lady used to drive to and from church and the grocery store.
There's an Andy Grifith show about this one where Barney is looking to buy such a car and ends up getting conned. Pretty decent episode. I think it's called "Barney's first car" or "Barney's car." ---------------- Now playing: Linkin Park - Forgotten via FoxyTunes

IcePrincessKRS
good advice here. what i would recommend is find a car similar to that one on a different lot. same year, size, brand or even model. a lot of cars these days are identical to other ones. anyways get your amount of cash. less than the listed prices but not by much, and see which one will go down that far. if they don't deal with you, THEN LEAVE. its your biggest weapon in these kinds of deals. they either reconsider your offer and you get the car cheap, or they dont and you leave without overpaying.
Yeah, my husband went and bought a used Chevy Aveo (we'd had one before and needed a second, small, good gas mileage, car for him to take to and from work) and so he did some research on what a used Aveo was worth, etc. and went to nearby dealerships (pre-approved for his loan) and told them the price he wanted to pay "out the door"---remember THAT phrase, it includes all fees, taxes, etc., so you're not paying 10k for the car and then a bunch of taxes on top of that. We bought our minivan (new, not used) that way, too. When he bought the Aveo, though, they didn't want to sell it for the price Matt offered so he started to leave 2 or 3 times and they kept calling him back offering lower. By the time he agreed to their offer they were desperate.
