President Obama is probably not itching for a fight over abortion. But he might get one. With unusual speed, the Vatican has condemned Obama's Jan. 23 repeal of the ban on U.S. funding for foreign family planning aid groups who offer abortion services.

The repeal fulfils a campaign promise Obama made to pro-choice supporters. But if the late Friday afternoon signing was an attempt to get the change in under the radar, it didn't work. Top Vatican officials, usually hesitant to respond directly to Washington's domestic policy decisions, pounced quickly. By Saturday afternoon, the Holy See was emailing reporters the Sunday edition of its official daily, L'Osservatore Romano, which features a front page headline describing Obama's decision as "very disappointing."

....

Fisichella brushed off earlier vows by the new president to try to cut the number of abortions, while ensuring a woman's access to the procedure. "On ethical questions, you can't play with words," said the Italian Archbishop, considered close to Pope Benedict XVI. "Hiding behind sophisms isn't worthy of he who has a responsibility towards citizens. People want clarity."
Now, the next step should be excommunications for Catholics who support Abortion, especially those causing scandal (ie. pro-abort Catholic politicians...)

I've heard rumor that if FOCA hits the tables/passes, there will be excommunications for every Catholic that voted in favor of it... just rumor though... wouldn't that be sweet.

Imagine the flak we'd take from all these 'progressive' hippies. It would be heavenly.
I'm with you guys, let's excommunicate everybody that won't take a pro-life vow publically in the Church with God and the bishop as their witness.
Considering the strength and unanimity of the Church, the fact that we still have to debate it would be laughable if it weren't true.

Saint Therese

O'bama started it when he basically told the Pope to mind his own business-he said that they woud "agree to disagree".
I agree with the Vatican that that is arrogant.

Nevermind. I disagree. It'd be a tragedy to be cut off from sacramental grace, and I definitely can't get excited over that, no matter who it was.

Something must be done. Seriously. These people are not only giving scandal, but giving an example that people are following. I don't see how the bishops can get around their obligation to act now.
God help us.

If someone merits the punishment of excommunication, they have already removed THEMSELVES from sacramental grace. To receive the Eucharist in mortal sin is to eat and drink condemnation upon yourself. You receive none of the grace present.

To go to confession and not confess mortal sins by name and number is to make a sacriligious confession and you therefore walk out of confession with more mortal sins then you walked in.

To be married or confirmed in mortal sin, although the objective sacrament is made present, the subjective graces are not received until sacramental confession is made.

It's exciting because it means the truth is being told. Those being excommunicated are being excommunicated for their own good. It is exciting because the bishops are ministering to the souls of the politicians rather than their (the politicians) temporal desires.
