I have never heard people argue against sarcasm. Oh, and I was NOT being sarcastic. ---------------- Now playing: The Killers - When You Were Young via FoxyTunes
Veridicus
Am I supposed to take this thread seriously? Just Kidding But seriuosly, sarcasm is probably best avoided. That line between sarcasm and perfect wit is so thin. Usually I just settle for sarcasm because its easier. Its kinda like the cursing of witty humor. Think a little harder and then say it more nicely if you are trying to makea joke. And if your sarcasm is meant to hurt someone's feelings, then of course it is bad. Nihil Obstat
I've gotten into trouble before when people don't realize I'm being sarcastic, but I do it a lot, and for the most part I get my point across that I'm not doing it just to hurt someone. Other than that....... if you're actually in a fight with someone, sarcasm works as well as anything.
puellapaschalis
The Dutch, I can personally testify, know sarcasm about as well as a Martian microbe might be intimate with a Twix bar. Every now and then I get bomblasted by Dutchies on my blog for making blanket statements about Dutch people. Of course these Dutchies are my friends. But oh dear, they have a strange idea of funny. Or "using sarcasm to make a point", for that matter.

But it can be very effective at making a point humorously... seeing the humor usually helps them see the underlying truth. Jesus used sarcasm several times. We don't catch it because our approach to the Gospels is sometimes too formal. Of course, I can't think of any examples offhand, but maybe others know of some. Of course, I may be reading sarcastic humor into the Scripture when it's really something else...

prose
I am really sarcastic a lot. BUT That being said, sarcasm really can be poison. In our marriage we have had to make a point to refrain from sarcasm because after a while, it can turn into hurtful comments. It is demeaning for someone to constantly have another person be sarcastic to them, particularly in front of other people. Especially because we tend to be more sarcastic to people we are comfortable with. I think sarcasm as a whole is okay, but it is very important to remember that it is really hurtful to some people.
