Dozens get off with nothing.
+J.M.J.+ many plead out, and if they are first time offenders, get parole, not jail time. or get suspended sentences. all of which means that they are still out there, just probably being more careful about getting caught. of course, we're talking about not smart people in the first place, so they probably will get caught again! Lil Red
+J.M.J.+ Critics of the show: NBC's "To Entrap" a Predator
TCAP has nothing to do with protecting children; it's a Roman Amphitheater blood sport in the form of the lowest gutter journalism on the market today. Which is saying a lot. It's the ultimate car wreck type rubbernecking--to watch another person make life wrecking mistakes, to sin, be humiliated, and punished. What a wonderful feeling. Child molesters are our society's most hated members. Some of those caught in the TCAP trap are no doubt vile serial predators but it looks like most are just very sad and lonely men--virgins unable to get a date with adults, or often just reckless low class losers caught in a trap. In today's America it impossible to criticize such "kiddy saving" as this without being branded a monster. PJ and TCAP have the upper hand morally. Were it to be so simple, the damage may not be so great. But people are going to jail for years and having their lives destroyed for these totally fake set-up sex chats, for our entertainment. And as with the war on terrorism, the ultimate effects are much more serious and counter-productive than may appear on the surface.
Collin DA fires back at 'Dateline' over sex sting More Criticism For "To Catch A Predator"

Dan
Even if Dateline helps defray the expense of the local police department, even if Dateline helps pay for the Perverted Justice personnel, even if Dateline pays for the renatl of the house they use, even if Dateline pays for the internet subscriptions required for the operation, even if Dateline does any number of related things, the question remains, how many of the perps were able to avoid fines, probation or jail by using "entrapment" as a defense? I believe that if one more perp were to use this as a defense, the total would be one. Good journalism? Maybe maybe not. Public service? Yup. If they are given parole that means they have already served time in jail. Common mistake
