Moving

Hey phamily! I just wanted to let yall know that Jason (RemnantRules) and I are moving to Virginia next month! This will be a BIG change, since we've both lived in Texas our whole lives. Jason accepted an amazing youth ministry job in Springfield and we're very excited. However, we're sadly leaving our family, friends, and everything we're familiar with. We're still looking for housing and a job for me, so your prayers during this time of transition would be greatly appreciated! Also, any words of wisdom about moving across country would be great. Or if you have any tips about living up north for us southerners. ^_^

Thanks pham!

Layering works for me in the cold north. I've moved a bunch of times, and the key is preparation. Spend some extra time when packing. Think about what you will need immediately, and what you can live without for a time. Put the important stuff in first, so it will be on top when you unpack the truck/trailer. That way if you are busy at first, and can't unpack everything, you can find the important stuff. Label the boxes well to save time. On the outside I put the room something went to, and a sheet on top with contents. If someone else is moving the stuff for you, keep a copy of these sheets in case something goes missing. You will know exactly what is missing. Use clothing like t-shirts and towels as your packing stuffing. McDonald's has some of the best boxes. Ones that their frozen stuff comes in are really heavy duty, a nice size to pack, and usually clean. Make sure you use lots of hand lotion while handling the boxes. I found it kept me from getting paper cuts.

lol this might sound silly but ....

Be sure to pack toilet paper and hand soap for the move. When Micah and I moved we forgot to buy toilet paper and hand soap before the move, needless to say I was 5+ months pregnant lol and had no toilet paper. I had to hurry up and run to the store and get some tp and soap. Soooo... moral of the story. Pack the tp and soap with you where you know where to find it so that you will not have to stop in the middle of unpacking and moving stuff in order to go to the store.

I like VA -- and I came from Texas ('though I've lived a lot of other places, too). VA feels more Southern than DC or MD, but it still takes a bit of getting used to. But down in Springfield you'll be a bit more removed from the City, which is nice -- and yet you're still just an easy metro-ride to visit Downtown, the Basilica (yay!) and Zachary (most important -- at least for me)!

:)

A tip for housing: Do you need to be very accessible to the Metro? Anything walking distance to a metro stop can get quite pricey. If you don't need the metro for commuting every day, look farther away. There are some lovely apartments and neighborhoods here in VA. I live up near the Pentagon / Arlington Cemetery (Rosslyn / Clarendon metro) and I love to go running through the neighborhoods and see all the pretty houses.

What kinds of jobs are you looking for?

Visiting with Zachary will make it seem less foreign up here, too -- and I'd like to meet you both!

:)

Good luck with the move!

Hey phamily! Just wanted to update yall about our move. We arrived safely in Springfield, Virginia on Saturday and have been settling in since. We're staying with some family for now and will look for our own place soon. Jason's first day of work is tomorrow and I'm checking out a hopeful job lead in Alexandria today. Please keep us in your prayers as we continue to adjust and move forward! ^_^
