Lil Red
+J.M.J.+ what was your first post on phatmass? post it and any context to it (i.e. the post/person you were responding to). mine was:
I have been unsure about the effectiveness of NFP. I'm sorry if I'm a "bad" Catholic by saying this, but until I can see hard-core proof that NFP is effective without a lot of training, I won't use it. I'm a young, married Catholic and my husband and I are so broke that chances of a baby would be extremely detrimental to us. A baby is a gift and deserves to be treated as such; but my husband and I can't afford to treat a baby like a gift right now if we got pregnant. We want kids, but when we can afford them. In my opinion, NFP has too much of a chance of getting me pregnant, and we just can't afford that chance. I'll stick with other methods that are proven extremely effective. I just ask for everyone's prayers that my husband and I can get out of our situation. Thanks
and Kilroy the Ninja responded with:
Welcome to phatmass Lil Red!
A baby is a gift and deserves to be treated as such; but my husband and I can't afford to treat a baby like a gift right now if we got pregnant.
I want you to know that this is a wonderful sentiment. But I hope you realize that the greatest gift you can give your child is the gift of yourself. Being there for them is more precious than any material thing they could possess. (Except perhaps pampers. Very important ) When we found out we were pregnant, my husband also found out that his job as a teacher was probably in jeopardy (turned out it was!) and that he would probably be black listed (turned out he was!). The future looked bleak for the prospect of having anything to give this child at all (including clothes). But we put it in God's hands. Now, I realize that's a very easy thing to say. It has been so hard for me to do! I'm a control freak and must know where everything is, and have the security of knowing where everything is going. But honestly everything has turned out better for us than I could have possibly imagined. We have been given so many things for the baby, that we've actually been able to pass some of them on to other friends. We have truly been blessed.
We want kids, but when we can afford them.
That was me until I realized that if I waited until that time, I would be old and gray when my kids were graduating high school. There is always a way to afford kids. I wish you knew me a little better, because my biggest issue is a somewhat lacking faith. But God really has been there for us during this time. As of now, my husband will be going to work again as a full-time teacher, with a contract, for a wonderful principal at a great Catholic school. I'm staying home with the baby and we're learning to live on less money, but I couldn't be happier. My baby lacks for nothing and we're both able to be there for him. It has truly been a blessing. I did not use NFP and am currently not using it, but that is due to a hormone condition and I'm hoping to cure that. I guess my point to all this is, please reconsider NFP! And even if you have heard it a thousand times, it really is true: you will be truly blessed when you let God take things over. He will never give you more than you can handle. God Bless you and your husband!
Edited February 20, 2012 by Lil Red

CatherineM
My first one was just an introduction on the intro thread, so here's my second one: "This topic reminded me of a funny story my dad told me. When he was a kid, the YMCA was just for guys, and they swam in the nude. After swim class, he discovered that someone had stolen his clothes. He had to go home by running across the rooftops. In NYC you can do that is some parts of town. It was also snowing at the time, so no one was sunning themselves on the tar beaches. He lived with his grandmother, and she vacillated between being angry at him for losing his clothes, and corrupting the morals of anyone who might have seen him. I forget how many rosaries he said she made him do, but it was a bunch." It was in the debate thread about guys taking their shirts off.

ardillacid
Hey, I found this site doing a google search of a couple issues, and was struck by how well most of the posters knew their stuff. After a day of thinking about it, I thought I'd join and see how I fit in. I love to talk with people about religion, but people my age just aren't interested as a general rule. I'm not sure yet how active I'll be, but I suppose we'll find out as time goes on. He lived in those days too...until he came back from the Korean War. He was the only one in the pool nude. Apparentally it wasn't alright to swim in the nude by then. tinytherese
I first heard about phatmass from Jason Evert's chastity website on the links page, but didn't get on to phatmass until my senior year of high school. I had gotten home from my visit with the Benedictine Sisters of Mary Queen of Ephesus and was looking for more communities that had the traditional latin mass but were still in union with Rome so I did a google search and I found the vocation station. I honestly didn't expect to be on here so much. I thought that after looking at that thread on tradies that I wouldn't even come back to phatmass but I'm still here, practically two years later. My first post though was on the vocation station where there was a thread on what books people recommended for discerning a vocation and I submitted my entry. Funny, some time after I joined there developed a rule where you have to have 10 posts before posting on the vocation station. For a long time, that was mostly the only place that I was on for. I recommend "The Secret of the Rosary", "Lay Siege to Heaven," (It's about the life of St. Catherine of Siena in the form of a novel.) "Celine", (The biography of the sister of St. Therese and how her sister influenced her.) "The Way of Perfection", and if you want a book about defending the Catholic faith "Catholicism and Fundamentalism." If your a fan of the Chronicles of Narnia then you should check out the other works of C.S. Lewis like "Mere Christianity" and "The Screwtape Letters". eagle_eye222001
Matthew was bored. He surfed the internet. Remembered that sister now went to weird site. Decided to check out weird site. Saw someone attacking the papacy. Eagle_eye222001 was born...
QUOTE (dairygirl4u2c @ Sep 6 2008, 10:05 AM) * i used to put down catholics who don't follow all its teaching as much as the next person. evne when i became an excatholic i did that. but, then i started to see the weaknesses in the papal infallibility arguments,...when i have gotten in debates with the orthodox, about infallbility, i feel like i'm making excuses and rationalizations to defend the papal position. i do still debate them from time to time too, to see what else i can learn on the matter, and it ends the same way. What weaknesses? How does it end? I often find that this issue get horribly misunderstood and therefor is not correctly questioned or scrutinized. On another note, it is good to see the Bishops and Archbishops getting mentioned in the media about questioning Catholic politicians views on important life matters such as abortion. While this confrontation will generate some backlash among these politicians, many non-Catholics, and even some Catholics, it will begin to force those who are in such positions to question why are they Catholic and do they want to be Catholic. We may lose some Catholics this way, however, we will have a stronger church by having members who are truly Catholic and who believe in core Catholic principles and teaching.

When eagle_eye began, the thread was half a page with several different people commenting on the Pelosi vs Archbishop on abortion.
eagle was going to make a point and exit. But the exit didn't come]
By the time he finished arguing the case for the papacy with a little detour debate on wikipedia, the thread was five pages of mostly eagle_eye and dairygirl4u2c trading shots with various others poking their heads in from time to time to see how the battle was waging.
Memories... Special thanks to Jesus_lol who found this for me as I was looking for it the hard way. Archaeology cat
Under my first SN (shinobininjasp):
Hi! I'm an (almost) 22-year-old archaeologist in the state of Florida, though Kentucky will always be "the Motherland." I'm waiting around in Florida until I can go to grad school for Near Eastern/Egyptian archaeology, either this fall or next fall. I'm currently a member of the Methodist church but I will soon be converting to Catholicism, so be prepared for lots of questions smile.gif Other than that, I'm completely addicted to reading Strong Bad's emails at www.homestarrunner.com and to playing Bushido Blade II on Playstation. I look forward to getting to know a lot more people through this.
Under this SN (I didn't know the other SN was still valid when I came back to PM), I was responding to Cathoholic Anonymous. I think it was about Catholic adoption agencies.
This is so sad. I was reading about it in Liverpool's Metro (I don't have TV, so I can't watch about it).
