I'm reading a book by Phillip Roth right now called The Plot Against America. Pretty good piece of political and historical fiction.

What the Church does not need is more bad representation in modern culture. There are a million, million idiots in the world waiting for more reasons to hate catholicism and to destroy respect for its hierarchical structure. And when sensationalist conspiracy-theorists like Dan Brown begin their novels with what is found on page 1 of 'The DaVinci Code" stating "FACT:....All descriptions of artwork, architecture, documents, and secret rituals in this novel are accurate" and then proceeds at a sloppy attempt at constructing fantasy and historical drama...IT IS sickening. Of course everyone knows the characters and storyline are fiction, but when the author begins the novel guaranteeing that the facts about history, documents, etc. have been "accurate"ly presented...the average idiot reader takes it at face value and never looks any deeper. Especially if the garbage presented fits comfortably into a worldview already held by the reader, namely that the Catholic church is run by a bunch of whackjob power-hungry killers who corrupt history and theology in order to enslave the masses into confusion and submission. I doubt if 1/3 of Dan Brown's readership has a discriminating enough eye to see through the bs or has taken the time to really evaluate the historical/architectual/documentary claims made in his novel. I have and he's astoundingly "INaccurate" on virtually every level; no surprise. But then again I have an informed conscience regarding the Catholic Church and I take the time to challenge the information I'm given. What the Catholic Church does NOT need is any more bad PR, any more reason for people to distrust her hierarchy, or any more reason to think her theological pronouncements are just the whims of power-hungry clergy (or their sycophantic underlings). And I feel like at this point in history I can't drop a quarter in a video-store without it bouncing off a movie with a pedophile priest, or a corrupt bishop, or a sniveling cardinal, or a Pope hiring assassins to knock-off people who disagree with their 'contrived' theology.
