They have just as much right to Saturday morning cartoons as the rich kids. Not to mention the great stuff on public TV. -Katie

An excuse to get bigger, and have more people completely dependent and pacified. And it bothers me that the Federal Government effectively gains power over the media in the process. Apotheoun
Perhaps the purchase of digital televisions will cause an economic boom.

Tinkerlina
I think the issue is that TVs without converters won't work. -Katie

Yes, there are a number of inane shows on TV (though, like I said, I think all kids need a little mindless diversion now and then), but as they grow up, not having access to news, etc will be a problem. -Katie

cmotherofpirl
My sister did some of her student teaching in a very poor are of the city last semester and I know it was an issue that most of them weren't going to have TV after the digital switch. The digital switch will render non digitally enabled TVs unable to pick up a signal and the families of most of these kids couldn't afford to enable their TVs. -Katie
The government gives you two coupons, so it costs you about $10- 20 to upgrade 2 TVs per household. Didn't you ever watch "Reading Rainbow"-great show. This is especially beneficial to children in high poverty areas as in many cases, the necessity of both parents working, or absentee parents means that they're not getting any extra help outside of the classroom. -Katie

Lounge Daddy
I figured there was a good reason that, for the first time ever, the "wealthiest 1%" began paying into the tax system over 40%. And the top 10% pay 71%, and the top 50% pay 97% of all taxes. That bears repeating. The top 50% are paying 97% So that people can buy a house that they cannot afford, and watch digital tv in that house. The voters have realized that they can vote themselves other people's money. And the Political Class knows this. And Washington has power over the digital media in the process. It's the perfect plan.
