I am 100 percent in love with reading and advocate it. That doesn't mean I don't think that TV has many educational benefits. Some of my highschool teachers required me to watch various news shows and write reports on them.-Katie

ETA: Does this mean you don't watch TV and exclusively read?
Actually, many shows on TV help children learn the alphabet, letters, numbers, etc. (I should know, I watch these shows with the kids I babysit). Didn't you ever watch "Reading Rainbow"-great show. This is especially beneficial to children in high poverty areas as in many cases, the necessity of both parents working, or absentee parents means that they're not getting any extra help outside of the classroom. -Katie
Most of the kids at the school where I teach were homeschooled and their parents rarely if ever allowed them to watch televsion, and they are all doing quite well in school.

But those kids had the benefit of above average parental involvement. Am I saying TV is crucial for cognitive development? No. I'm saying that it does have benefits. And let's not pretend we don't watch it ourselves. -Katie

Ya, supposedly closing them oversees and moving them into California.

Television is a poor babysitter. Honestly, the more the kids at my school have watched television the shorter their attention span.

Why doesn't PBS count? That's one of the main things I was referring to. But any news shows are on basic NBC/ABC/CBS. Also, there's EWTN...-Katie

The only show I currently watch, which I download off the internet because I cannot afford cable tv, is Heroes, and it is lovely brainless special visiual effects entertainment.

I'm not advocating we let kids watch TV day and night but I do think poor kids have just as much a right to Spongebob as the middle class. -Katie

You actually consider the network stuff actual news ? Considering all the mandatory fluff - cooking tips, which actress is shacking up with who, the latest designer dresses etc?

I do have a small dvd collection of movies (mainly sci fi), but I do have access to my mom's dvd collection, which includes lots of old movies.
