Right - lets lower their test scores even more...

Local news is pretty relevant. Most of the tabloidesque stuff I see on cable networks (except Fox, which I don't watch). -Katie

Years ago I watched the MacNeil / Lehrer News Hour, but that must have been in the early 1990s or late 1980s.

If you really think that their test scores are low because of watching occasional cartoons... -Katie

Cool-beans. And poor kids have no less "right" to watch brainless shows than any of us. -Katie

There is no "right" to watch any television show.

Ok, right isn't a good word, I'll rephrase: Do you think disadvantaged children should have less of an opportunity to watch TV than you (or me, or anyone else, I don't mean you personally).

Honestly, I think that they would benefit from watching less television. In my opinion television tends to make kids practically comatose.

Generally speaking, I'd agree with you, however I do think TV can be beneficial in many instances and I kind of think this is like the "digital divide" issue all over again. -Katie

Ya, that's what cracks me up about this. There isn't a right to tv.
But the Federal Government has done a very good job of creating a widespread entitlement mentality. And they have won themselves a widespread uninformed voting base that only wants to vote themselves other people's money, because it's their "right."

There is nothing occasional about it:
Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF):

two-thirds of infants and toddlers watch a screen an average of 2 hours a day
kids under age 6 watch an average of about 2 hours of screen media a day, primarily TV and videos or DVDs
kids and teens 8 to 18 years spend nearly 4 hours a day in front of a TV screen and almost 2 additional hours on the computer (outside of schoolwork) and playing video games
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that kids under 2 years old not watch any TV and that those older than 2 watch no more than 1 to 2 hours a day of quality programming. [cartoons are not quality programs]

The average American child will witness 200,000 violent acts on television by age 18.
Number of murders seen on TV by the time an average child finishes elementary school: 8,000

Kids in the United States see 40,000 commercials each year.

Number of minutes per week that parents spend in meaningful
conversation with their children: 3.5
Number of minutes per week that the average child watches television: 1,680

Hours per year the average American youth spends in school: 900 hours
Hours per year the average American youth watches television: 1500

Children need food and water and a roof over their heads. They don't *need* tv.
