If he comes to the accepted historical belief, I hope that he in some way makes it clear that he is not saying it merely for the sake of being in line with the Vatican mandate, but because he honestly discovered he was in error. It would be a huge show of humility and intellectual honesty which, of course, would sadly be interpretted by those who do not know the true character of this man as a capitulation to pressure and that would be the bad precedent... but I hope that whichever way things go he ends up a bishop in good standing in the Church... we need good and honest bishops like him. I have seen on another site the awesome suggestion that he should come out saying that he has re-evaluated and determined that 6 trillion Jews were actually killed and that anyone who held a lower number than that was a denier. made me chuckle

I've come across a few none believeres like me who have tried to fairly look at his writtings and can remain nothing if not impressed by the scope and profound depth of his thought, but for most people the fact that he was a German in the army during Hitler is enough to beaver dam him from the start. Not to mention that, with all due respect, he can look a bit like a scary old German man I'm afraid that nothing that any of these actors do here are going to get a fair shake. I hope they just move as honestly as they can and trust the non Catholics of good will will judge their actions fairly and those who won't arn't going to give them any pats on the back anyway. Next thing you know in addition to the "filioque" Roman Catholics will be required to say: "I believe in one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church, and in the holocaust of the Jews at the hands of the Nazis, the murder of millions of Armenians at the hands of the Turks, and the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. I profess one baptism for the remission of sins. I expect the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen." Now that will be an interesting creed. Apotheoun
Yes. I would simply reiterate the point that I made earlier, i.e., that I am concerned about the Vatican's recent actions, because they evince confusion between what is essential to the faith, and something that is completely unrelated to Catholic doctrine.
