Yes that is allowed and was the liturgical norm for many, many centuries. It wasn't until this last century that the laity commonly communicated under both species. The reasoning being it was a more 'complete sense' of participation in Communion (it had long before been decided that the entirety of the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Christ were fully present under either species).
If my memory serves me, I believe it is actually a heresy to believe that one must receive under both forms...

No axe-grinding. ;)
I agree, though.
When there's an army of laity that march to the altar before receiving the Body and Blood of our Lord, it's a bit distracting. I honestly don't mind waiting 15 minutes to receive from a priest (and if one believe what's really in the Eucharist, and I find it hard to believe that they would have to wait that long, either) if I have to.

I know, and it's not that I either agree or disagree with this, it's just that I really don't want to hear it on this thread. :P

We used to have an altar rail and two priests so 10-15 minutes for Communion was not uncommon. Most people now however get upset if Mass is over one hour because they have other things to do.

Isn't that a shame?

Here's something of an abuse.
After I was received into the church, I took up the practice of genuflecting before I received communion.
Months later, in the confessional, the priest told me that I wasn't to do that any more.
(Even though the USCCB says I can...I don't want to argue with him though. He is the priest after all.) It's really hard for me not to do it. :(

He said that the bishops said you can't do that...even though as we both know, is the opposite of the truth.

I probably would take the document with me to see what he says.

I guess that wouldn't be a bad idea, but I would feel really awkward about correcting a priest.

It's probably not very common that the kid is more traditional and socially conservative than the parents...
