CatherineM
We talked about this case at my human trafficking meeting this week. It certainly shows how a society can still view women, or children, as chattel. When we view any segment of our society as less valuable, or as disposable, it is a very small step to view them as a commodity. The way women are viewed in Saudi Arabia is little different that being a slave. When the US had slavery, slaves were not allowed to learn to read or to swim because both would allow them to potentially escape. If you can read a map and swim across a river, you can get away. I suspect that in addition to just the idea of control, not allowing women to drive there serves the same purpose. They can't get away if they aren't allowed to drive. Lashing this woman seems little different than how a run away slave would have been treated 150+ years ago.

Soon, you'll be accused of hate-mongering against Muslims, what with all the Islam-related threads you've been posting lately. Or maybe it's only "hate-mongering" when I post the threads. [/quote] Your posts sometimes to often seem to add angry, unsustainable claims about Muslims in general. Which would be different from a report about a draconian legal system and its consequences for women who are victims of sexual assault.

tinytherese
Technically though, it's the Fundamentalist Muslims that are the terrorists. There are multiple branches in Islam but it's the extremists that tend to cause the terror.

When they have those for suicide bombers, I just want to call the number and scream.

I have also quoted the Koran on numerous occasions to back up my own comments and opinions about Islam. And yes, I am angry about Islam. Probably at least as angry as others on Phatmass are about liberals, or pro-abortionists or any number of other topics that are posted about people and events around the world which members of Phatmass deem important.
