“THE VIEW” RIPS CATHOLICISM—AGAIN

A news story in today’s New York Post claims there is “a new study approved by the Vatican” on sin that concludes that “Men and women sin in different ways.” Men are more given to lust; women to pride. This story was the subject of an exchange today on the ABC-TV show, “The View.” Here is an excerpt:

Whoopi Goldberg: Realize the Vatican is the last word in all things that are god. For some folks. But explain how you suddenly can write new sins. You can't do that.

Joy Behar: The pope is supposed to be infallible. He can say whatever he wants and people believe it. That's how it goes.

Goldberg: But that doesn’t make any sense.

Barbara Walters: What do you think is the biggest sin?

Behar: Lust amongst priests.

Elizabeth Hasselbeck: Pedophilia. They put that in the year after.

Goldberg: The biggest sin?…Intolerance.

Catholic League president Bill Donohue responded as follows:

“After we blasted Barbara Walters in an op-ed page ad in the New York Times in June 2007 for sanctioning anti-Catholic bigotry on 15 occasions over the previous year, she got the message and quieted her panelists. But now they’re back, expressing their ignorance as well as their hostility.

“Goldberg is wrong to say that the Vatican is writing new sins: The report quotes one monsignor about a study whose author remains curiously undisclosed. Behar, another ex-Catholic, is wrong to speak so sweepingly about the pope’s infallibility: almost everything he says is of a fallible nature, and he has said absolutely nothing about this issue. And Hasselbeck, yet another ex-Catholic, was anxious to show that she also hates Catholics (she succeeded), paints priests as child molesters. How ironic it is to hear them say it is the Church that is intolerant. If only they could hear themselves speak.”

Okay, how the heck is that considered "writing new sins" [b]especially[/b] if these sins have always existed! If anything, this is helpful - it helps us to be aware of what sins we are susceptible to so we can better avoid them. Obviously they are proving this study true by their [u]prideful[/u] responses.

Fortunately, on House though the priest was discovered to be innocent of such an accusation.

Last time I checked pride and lust are part of the 7 Deadly Sins that we already knew about. How are these "new"? The writer is just trying to show how genders may fall into different sin easier. I have never in my life sat through an entire episode of that show and never plan on it. I don't care of the "point of view" of women who have no room or knowledge to speak of some of things they speak about, not just Catholic issues, but many other topics.

I think we can all agree we are tired of hearing about the priest scandal. I'm tired of defending 99% of our priests and those select few who did sin, and countless others that were falsely accused and the damage that has done to them (i.e. shown on House).

...just watch, and you'll notice...

there was an attack against the Eucharist on "Bones"...there's been a few episodes on those crime shows about pedophile priests....

Yea, it really is tiring and I have the feeling that talk of the scandal won't end until the world itself ends.

If any new sins are being written, they are being written by us, not the church. In my life time we have invented identity theft, internet porn addiction, and many other degradations, but like Remnant said, they are still all within the 7 deadly ones, greed and lust in the cases above.

And I remembered that one of the Popes last century (I think John XXIII but not 100% confident on that) but he said "The loss of sin is the greatest sin of the century." I still think it's bleeding through to this century.

And Catherine added something I forgot to add which was the Church isn't sitting around thinking of new Sin, we as sinners come up with new sin to get into.

I'm only on Season 2 of Bones, but it seems that, despite Booth being a (quite) lax Catholic, the show seems to have an inherent respect for Catholicism, despite Dr. Brennan's complete lack of faith. I haven't been offended by it's take on Catholicism yet.

Most TV show writers are very ignorant of the Catholic faith, so they use caricatures rather than anything real, and get most of the details wrong.

For instance, watch [i]The Excorcist[/i] - they show a few mistakes (for instance, I think the host is broken too early in an excerpt of a mass they do), but for the most part? The prayers, the vestments, the location, etc, etc, are all more-or-less what you would expect from Catholic priests or in a Catholic church. 'The power of Christ compels you' is a line from the prayer of exorcism. It's [i]mostly[/i] accurate.

I heard an interview with Ed Norton over the movie [i]Keeping the Faith[/i], and he mentioned that many of the production crew were former Catholics, so they were able to give input about getting some of the details right. I haven't seen the movie, so I don't know how well they did with that. I do know that it was their intention to make a comedy that was not offensive to people of faith (it's basically a rabbi/priest joke)...but whether or not they succeeded, I don't know.


Compare that with a show like CSI or Without A Trace or Law and Order, when they have a reason to visit a Catholic church or question a priest about something. Vestments, liturgy, everything is woefully messed up - it's barely recognizable as Catholic. It is very clear that the people writing the story have no idea what they are talking about, so the representation is quite often a caricature. In their defense - crime shows are alwasy showcasing people involved in sex scandals and murder. I have only seen a few episodes of Bones, but my impression was that they used Brenner's over-the-top secularism in a somewhat humorous way, so that you aren't supposed to take that scathing part of her personality entirely seriously. Booth is her counterpart in that sense. It seems an interesting dynamic, so they can get away with a lot without actually offensively making fun of anyone.

'The View' is not supposed to be fiction or entertainment, though, so if they want to go off on something, they should have some idea what they are talking about. It's not Letterman, where you can just say outrageous stuff as a joke. I don't watch it.
