Selah
"Leviticus 10 1 Aaron's sons Nadab and Abihu took their censers, put fire in them and added incense; and they offered unauthorized fire before the LORD, contrary to his command. 2 So fire came out from the presence of the LORD and consumed them, and they died before the LORD." I guess I am a little confused here. What exactly was this "strange fire", and why was it an offense enough for God to kill them? Can you guys help me out? Ziggamafu
The liturgy belongs to God, not to men. This passage demonstrates the gravity of deliberate liturgical abuse. See Ratzinger's The Spirit of the Liturgy for more info.
Selah
Can you elaborate a bit? How was it liturgical abuse? What were they abusing?
Ziggamafu
God authored the liturgical celebrations of the Hebrews. These guys introduced a variation into the lighting of the incense (unauthorized fire). Their crime was in treating the liturgy as if it belonged to them; as if it had merely human origins. God killed them for it.
