Would you want dual-citizenship with the land of your ancestors?

I can apply for an Irish passport. My brother has one. I love studying genealogy and feel very privileged to be able to access records that other citizens who came in chains can't. One of my grandfather's cousins donated our family slave records to the Virginia Historical Society so the decedents of some of the people my ancestors owned can research their history.

I heard that Whoopie Goldberg did this DNA thing, and it traced to a very small isolated tribe. Some reporters went there and showed her picture around. They had never heard of her since no one has electricity let alone a TV, but they all recognized the photo. She looked just like one of the families there. They'd like her to come visit, but since she doesn't fly, that isn't likely to happen any time soon.

me too, though had my father or mother had done it before I was born (since they're eligable) I could've gotten it. bah.

I don't feel the need to get dual citizenship, but I think the opportunity to visit is valuable. I have been to Bavaria, but not Ireland. I think it is telling that while most white Americans can say which European countr(ies) their ancestors are from, many black Americans just say their ancestors are from...'Africa' - the ability to identify with a particular culture is much more valuable, I think. I realize that for recent immigrants that is possible, but for those whose ancestors were brought here as slaves....without the DNA, they really don't know what country it is.

Yes. :)) Though the DNA thing said my paternal family are Italian more than British. That must explain my love of Italian cuisine. But my genealogy clearly traces us back to England.

I wouldn't go back to my "ancestral" lands if they paid me. Call me nuts, but being in a first world nation is pretty cool.

I'd totally accept. But that's never happening.[/quote]
