The check by the Secret Service seems like overkill, but the original incidend just seems like a mistake that got sorted out to me.
CatherineM
I wonder if the Secret Service actions had anything to do with the fact Oklahoma voted for McCain. If they are worried about hate groups, Oklahoma is definitely a good place to start looking for them.
Saint Therese
Were they so concerned about "hate groups" when Bush was being bashed to an unbelievable degree?

Despite the fact that Timothy McVeigh lived there long enough to plan and execute the Oklahoma City Bombings, I don't think there's anything in the water that makes Oklahoma'ns more prone to hatred. Tim McVey didn't spend much time in Oklahoma except when he was at Elohim City. Lots of guys train there.
Selah
Well, the bumper sticker was in poor taste...but still, the secret service did do an "overkill" as Nihil Obstat stated.
CatherineM
I think it does show how concerned the SS are about him having someone take a shot at him. I wonder if there has been some kind of thing come through the pipeline to local police, or if this cop was just being a zealot. He may have called the SS only because he realized that he was going to be in trouble, and was trying to mitigate.
kujo
Might I interject the possibility that Obama possesses one slightly different, but highly noticeable characteristic that sets him apart from his predecessors? No, I'm not referring to his love of basketball, or the fact that Ludacris wrote a song about him--though they are probably related to this characteristic. The fact is that Obama is African-American (well, at least half...but close enough). This makes him a target, maybe more so than he already would be. His election is unprecedented, for both good and bad reasons. One of those reasons is that the Secret Service has probably never had to deal with the very-real possibility that the KKK (or other people with that mindset) might want to take a shot at this president. Sure, you could argue that Kennedy had to deal with the same sort of stuff for being a Catholic (and, if you're a conspiracy theorist, you couldn't probably throw in the possibility that the mob had a hit out on him). But the fact remains that Obama being president is going to piss people off for reasons other than his (deplorable) political and/or social views; rather, there is still a segment of society that finds it wholly unacceptable to have an African American president. That's just a fact. And it's something that the Secret Service has never had to deal before. So yeah, this cop overreacted, as did the SS. Personally, I'd like the SS to be overly-cautious because they are tasked with protecting the president. It's better safe than sorry. Be that as it may, I'd say there's a learning curve here. And both the cop and the SS seem to have apologized for this incident, and the dude seems to have reconciled the fact that it was a mistake. We should just move on and hope it doesn't happen again. CatherineM
I've said repeatedly that I wouldn't want to be on his Secret Service team. He was in Ottawa for 6 hours this week, and just the Canadian security insisted on by the SS cost a couple of million dollars. I think they are terrified of what will happened with even a failed attempt. Someone joked on the news that if Stephen Harper went to visit in DC, the security would cost a buck in a half. Guess that means he isn't worth the cost of a bullet.
