My dog could beat up his cat. A basset wouldn't though, they always want to play with cats, and then get their feelings hurt when the kitty bops him hard on the nose.

Sounds pretty much like the response of my dad's bloodhounds. They have the most gentle dispositions of any dog I've ever seen. Very sweet and smart as well.
