Just Something I've Noticed...

If we go around bragging about how humble we are...we're probably not actually humble at all. ;)

If you are truly humble, you see yourself honestly, and see other people with God's love. There is nothing debasing about that. Humble people are amazing listeners. I like to surround myself with humble people....

I think it is human nature to believe your opinion carries more weight than the other in certain matters. Why give it? I think but I do not pretend to know human nature as well as I thought. I really only know my nature and I tend to believe I am right all the time, ask my wife who has proven me otherwise on many occasions.

I do notice I get into some head butts here on PM with my fellow Massers because I believe opinion is not doctrine when some might think otherwise. I tend to think the softer more compassionate side of our Faith and Christ’s teachings resonate more with me so I tend to argue based on that even though really it is all of God’s love. I quickly recant when doctrinal proof is provided to back one’s opinion however.

Jesus called himself humble, too. And obviously he was! So it's possible to say so truthfully.
There is a gulf...nay, an ocean of difference between how much people think they know about a particular issue, versus what they actually know. Doesn't seem to matter what the subject is or what side of the issue they fall on, or how popular or unpopular their opinion is. People tend to value their own opinions far beyond their actual worth.

On a similar (or maybe not?) vein, no saint has ever said "Yeah, I think I'm a pretty good person." or "I'm not perfect, but I try to be a good person." They always say "yeah I'm a wretched sinner, the least or everybody in the Kingdom, etc. etc."

Am I wrong? :P
truth is, we don't know crap about crap. we all just act like we do.

St. Joseph of Cupertino repeatedly rebuked a young child for saying, "Giuseppe is a good man." He didn't want his pride inflated at all. He often referred to himself as a donkey or a mule.

One can honestly say they're humble when they take as much pride in everybody else's achievements as they do in their own.
In my opinion. :)

Piccoli Fiori JMJ

The holy fathers teach that there are two kinds of humilty: to regard oneself lower than everyone else, and to ascribe all one’s achievements to God. The first is the beginning, the second the consummation.
The Rule of St. Augustine says, "every other kind of sin has to do with the commission of evil deeds, whereas pride lurks even in good works in order to destroy them."

Intellectual pride, no less than other forms of pride, really should be avoided at all costs.
Jeff.. man I have missed you around here... hopefully you'll be around more.

ok... not sure if I'm going too far with this, but I'm going to say it anyways...

I've noticed it a lot here on phatmass, especially in the debate boards. Its tough to say when the debate is truly a debate or has gone beyond that to a prideful "I'm not going to lose this" thing.

I know I may be guilty of this also, I apologize to the readers and members of phatmass for it.

What about if you have a chronic thing whereby you always always always underrate and underestimate yourself? I'm often told by friends and colleagues that I shouldn't be so hard on myself, and that I should recognise what I can do, what I'm good at, and what I do know. Where's the line between being honest about your positive qualities and not being humble?

from what i understand, false pride is when someone gives you a compliment, and you say something like "oh no, it's no big deal/i'm not (pretty, handsome, a great singer, whatever)". the difference is when someone gives you a compliment, and you say, 'thank you, it's a gift from God' - acknowledging that it is God who gave you your talent/gift/whatever, and it is not your own doing.
