The Real Reasons Octomom Drives Us Crazy
If this woman is going to be part of our everyday lives, like Lindsey and Britney and the rest, we should be honest about why she's there. Because, in truth, we created Octomom. With our glorification of bizarre behavior, we dare the emotionally needy to shock and appall us. And then we slam them. But are we seeing her clearly, or just addicted to feeling superior? Let's take a hard look at the four things about Suleman that ignite the most outrage. That way, the next time some knucklehead captures the national spotlight, we won't be lying to ourselves about why we're so interested.
Go to the link to read the four reasons.

I find it funny that people say she only got pregnant for the money, and they're the ones facilitating that in the first place...

reason number 5

She does not in the least seem a bit freaked out about the prospect of raising 14 kids with no income and barely holding on to a home.

Standing in the checkout line, I saw a picture of her next to Angelia Jolie. It was a little creepy. She's obviously got issues that need to be dealt with. My anger is at the doctor that allowed this. I read that she wants to get a TV show about mothering advice. I'm guessing that wouldn't work too well if the state has to take over the care of some of these kids.

From the article:

"Suleman, just like Dr. Frankenstein's monster, has come to symbolize the ill that arises when humans delve into the realm of creation. Hungry for knowledge, glory, fame and power, Dr. Frankenstein never paused in his quest to create life to consider the consequences of his actions, nor, it seems, did Suleman—when deciding that six was not enough."

A tad off-topic, but the irony of this statement is lost on the author.

The real reason Octomom drives me crazy is that she forces me to really think through and try to reconcile the ethics of an unique and startling situation. Here is a woman who is clearly selfish to the point of emotionally imbalanced in some way - admitting to the press that she wanted a large family to fill a childhood need, even - but who just as emphatically wanted to save all the embryos who were created in her quest to obtain this large family. (Unless this was just a line to throw out to the public for sympathy.)

As a Catholic, I agree with Church teaching that IVF is morally wrong. As a Catholic, I believe that treating the unused embryos as dispensible byproducts is also morally wrong. In general, I believe that those who have children should be able to care for them responsibly, as it is the child's right (and in his/her best interests) to have his/her basic needs met. So I want to throttle Octomom for her original thoughtlessness, selfishness and irresponsibility...and then I want to commend her for, at least in theory if not in fact, providing for each created embryo's right to life.

If this was discussed in a previous thread, I apologize. I'm new and didn't search first.

But she has an income [welfare] and will get a home[ courtesy of the government], so what does she have to worry about?

Even if that's the case (which I realize it is).... Most normal people would freak out at the prospect of having 14 children under the age of 8. The magnitude of that responsibility is lost on her and that is why she drives me crazy.

I had two special needs kids, and that was a full time job. I didn't have a minute to myself for 15 years. I just hope that social service keeps a very close watch. Low birth weight babies have so many developmental problems.

They'll end up raising themselves.

They never should have existed in the first place.

According to the Vatican, #1, not have made them. #2, carried them one or two at a time and then put up for adoption. #3, allow them to defrost and die a natural death.

Madame Vengier

I agree about the reality show. I absolutely believe she wanted--expected!!--to reap some fame and rewards from this. I think it explains her extreme plastic surgery as well. I think she wanted to look like AJ but also was getting herself ready for prime time. Everything she has done has been calculated.

I pray the state takes these children from her and gives them to wonderful people who can care for them the way they deserve. The only downside is finding a couple who will take all 8 children at once...many of whom will no doubt end up having special needs due to their low birth weight and poor in utero environment (Feeding 8 babies in the womb at once???? There's no way all 8 got equal nourishment in utero.) Ugh, this woman makes me crazy!!!!!!!!!!
