DiscerningSoul
There is a guy at my parish that always tries to talk to me before Mass, So I go in just as the church opens, put my veil on and start the Divine Office, now he just sits there and talks to others as they come in. Another thing that gets to me is how people receive our Lord, some just go up hold out there hand and pop him into there mouth. I keep to the tradition of genuflecting and receiving on the tongue, even thou some of the EM's really need to learn how to give to someone on the tongue. MissyP89
I actually hop lines so I get the priest. If I open my mouth to an EM they usually freak out.

I think I need to change where I sit, too, because she sits a couple of rows behind me, and gets Kieran to play with her, while I'm trying to get Kieran to sit quietly and at least pay attention at the Consecration (which he often does). When I went through EM training, they didn't teach us to distribute on the tongue, but now that I've started receiving on the tongue, I just make sure I'm in the priest's line. I would love to receive at the Communion rail, kneeling, personally. [quote name='MissyP89' post='1800295' date='Mar 8 2009, 06:12 AM']I actually hop lines so I get the priest. dominicansoul
I find that praying the Holy Rosary really loud before Mass when the talking and shrieking laughter goes on, really helps to quiet people down. Some even think I'm starting a public Rosary, and they join in! LOL! As for during the Holy Mass, I usually do not say or do anything, as I want my total attention (albeit, distracted) on what is happening at Mass. I think it is a pity that people have absolutely no respect for others' who are trying to make the most of their Mass experience. But then again, if they have no respect for God who is truly Present, than how can they ever respect their fellow parishioners?

I should just speak with Father about starting a public Rosary before Mass. Though we're actually in the process of transitioning to another parish since we moved, but maybe someone else would be inspired to take it up. And you're right with that second paragraph, too. I will try to pray for them more when such things happen.
MissyP89
And while we're on the topic... I'm a very laid-back, easygoing person, especially at Mass. But oh man, if your cell phone goes off in the middle of the consecration--and I'm not talking a ringer, I mean the freakin' 1812 OVERTURE (the song with cannons in it)...don't even get me started. This one time, somebody's cell rang during the homily. Fr. asked her if it was Jesus calling.
CatherineM
I have always found a half-insane looking, non-blinking, stare works wonders. Especially if you leave your pew and go to the end of theirs to do it.

Madame Vengier
This is nothing new. This goes on in every parish I have ever been to, anywhere. I would say the only place where it didn't really happen was Japan. But there was still walking around and whispering in the very back of the Cathedral which could be heard in the pew area. It just seems to be something that's oddly part of Catholic culture, like it or not. There are certainly bigger things to worry about, especially given the fact that each and every one of us has the power to do something about it by nicely but firmly reminding the whispering/talking person of where they are. Some people just don't think. Maybe they need a reminder. It depends on whether individuals are bold enough to speak up, or just sit there cowardly, letting it happen and boiling with anger about it. I've told lots of people to shut it in church. That goes for people chewing gum and young couples touching each other too much. I'm not scared and I don't care if someone's little feelings or pride gets hurt, either. They should consider God's feelings. elizabeth09
Just tell them that the longer they talk, the longer they have to stay. Also tell them that the friends are not going to sit by each other, unless they do not talk with each other. It that simple.

mcts
one time, we had a skit thing in in the homily and we had 5 people's cell phone's ring on purpose so that we could get some point across. when they rang, the person answered their phone and yelled "HELLO! CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW!?!?"
