yes, they're called Hamantaschen (or Hamentaschen) and depending on whom you ask, they represent either Haman's hat or Haman's ears. i also made some :)

Thank you for correcting me on that. I did figure out that they had something do to with Haman, so that's a step. ;)

:) When I graduated from uni with my undergrad, it was in December, so I didn't get to experience the Purim celebration with the Hebrew class in the Spring. I did get to help build the sukkah in the Fall, though (but I didn't sleep in it; it was cold).

I'm dating an awesome/amazing girl! :yahoo:

P.S. Awesome idea for a thread. I think sometimes us Phatmassers have a bad habit of having to post every piece of bad news we can find.

Just got back from Mass. I didn't think I was going to be able to make it today, as I'd missed it this morning, but Kieran and I were able to go to the 16.30 Mass instead.

Kieran also took a good, long nap today. He needed it, and so did I!

I totally had this math problem where I was able to do this awesome thing where I factored 64 out of 64cosx^2+64sinx^2 under the radical and the whole thing went to eight and then I divided everything by two. It was pretty cool. Mostly because my friend was totally going about it the wrong way and said I couldn't use a quadratic formula because that would yield two solutions.

To some of us, thinking of such complicated mathematics could be depressing. :annoyed:

I don't know if this is the same recipe Chaya used, but it's the one my friend sent to me:
Dough
2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour * 1/2 cup unsalted butter* zest of 1 lemon * 2 teaspoons lemon juice* 1 large egg * 3 tablespoons superfine sugar

Filling
3 tablespoons white raisins * 1/2 cup chopped walnuts * 1/4 cup unsalted butter * 1/4 packed cup light brown sugar * 1 teaspoon cinnamon * 1 medium red or green sweet apple, peeled

Glaze and Topping
White of 1 large egg * 2 tablespoons poppy seeds or decorative cake sprinkles

1. Place all the ingredients in a food processor that is fitted with a dough blade. Process until a dough is formed.

2. Remove the dough from the processor and wrap in plastic wrap. Flatten the dough to 1/2 inch thick and refrigerate for 30 minutes. Clean the processor bowl.

3. Make the filling. Place raisins, walnuts, butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon in the processor and pulse until combined.

4. Grate apples. Place between paper towels and squeeze any excess water from them. Stir into raisin-nut mixture.

5. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F

6. Lightly flour work surface. Remove the dough from plastic wrap and roll out to a 1/4 inch thick sheet. Use a 3 inch cutter or glass and cut circles into the dough.

7. Place about 1 teaspoon of the mixture in the center of each circle.

8. Fold the edges of the dough over the filling to form little triangles.

9. Place on baking trays and glaze with the egg white. Sprinkle poppy seeds or cake sprinkles.

10. Bake 15 to 20 minutes.
