Of course, the funny irony about flying is that it is the safest form of transportation, and aircraft engines are known as some of the most reliable machines in existence (so say my engineering friends from college, anyway, and I think they would have to be). Just look at all the airlines that have had no fatalalities since 1970, including Southwest, ATA, North American, and a number of popular regional airlines.

Certainly looks a lot safer than in Rainman's day.

As for me, I love flying, especially feeling those engines thrust during take off! That's the best part :) But I enjoy the whole experience... having my little seat in coach, being able to relax and read a book, hope I get to sit next that cute girl over there, and experiencing that little world inside an airport. It feels separated from reality in a way because everything around you is manufactured. Malls usually have some trees and fountains, but at most airports you can only observe God's creation through windows, and perhaps in your food or drink.

The only thing I really hated about flying was the dreadful pain in my ears and the 3-7 days it would take for my hearing to return to normal. My eustachian tubes are apparently too narrow, so chewing gum and those other tricks don't help equalize the pressure. But these goofy lookin' EarPlanes are just the trick... gotta try 'em if you have the same problem :)

I plan to stare at the wing to keep it on.
Whereabouts you live in Tampa?
Yeah, I say Hail Marys in rapid succession until it's over.
Me too! I love flying, but take-offs and landings not so much. Mainly because I get a bit queasy then. And I tell ya, flying on a transatlantic flight during my first trimester was not fun.
It's odd. I love flying, but I get freaked out in the slightest turbulence. And I do - lol - tend to make a confession right before I fly, which is pretty absurd when you consider that a consistent application of such a principle would be to go to confession before every car ride. ;)
Yeah, I hate turbulence. And I do tend to go to Confession shortly before flying.
My fears of flying are more general. I'm not afraid of dying so much as dying and leaving my children orphans.

If I were to fly with my children (which we haven't), I would fear that something would happen and I would have to QUICKLY figure out how to save them from dying. That scares me more than the idea of dying.

As for the actual flight. I like flying.

Speaking of transatlantic flights, anyone have tips on flying with a toddler? We're flying to the US to visit family this summer.
When I flew back from England, the air traffic controllers were having a staged "slow-down" so after spending like 8 hours over the Atlantic we had to spend several more hours in a holding pattern and we not allowed out of our seats to use the bathroom :sadder:  :annoyed:
That has happened to me...and it was from or to England, as well.

I live in Brandon, which is just Southeast of Tampa, about 20-30 min drive.

I wrote that message from the airport. When I said "about to get on a plane" I meant it. :)

Oh get this people....its Friday the 13th, I hate to fly, and when I got to the hotel with my wife, the room number is 911. On Friday, the 13th.

(And yes, I have those same fears about driving.)

I do the same thing! I was out driving today and thinking what I would do if someone ran into me.

Hmmm.... when we last flew Charlotte was just over a year old, she was pretty entertained by the little TVs, and I brought books and crayons for them. She also slept A LOT (this was a 20+ hour flight). I let them bring some little toys that they like (Polly Pocket type dolls). Just enough to keep them entertained without packing too much junk.
