Stuff To Do With A Theology Degree...

My Ecclesiology professor didn't have a doctorate in theology. She had one, just not in theology, just an MDiv, and is working on her Phd. Everyone else has had a Dr. I think. It can be hard to tell with priests or brothers instructing.

At my school, before you can even be admitted to the MDiv program, you have to pass through a discernment process. The seminarians obviously have a more intensive process, but the lay students do as well. You have to attend lay formation classes, every semester (not for credit either), have to be studying for a specific lay ministry, do a paper and interview, have a SD, etc. It was easier to get into law school, except the seminary didn't require fingerprints.

It is much less pressure though knowing I can do this for my own enrichment rather than worrying about trying to feed a family. There are a few advantages to being a gimp I guess.

I did my MA in Theology because I wanted to study theology in a more formal setting. That said, anyone who thinks that it is a good "career move" to study theology, is – to be blunt – an idiot, because we do not live in a society that honors God or the Church.

Spiritual Director

When I grow up, I think I'll go back to working in the tribunal. They want me to take over the Social Justice office, but my husband is afraid I'll get into too much trouble. I also think it might be interesting to work my way up to spiritual adviser at the national level in CWL, but I'd have to get over my fear of flying. I may just end up as a part time instructor at the seminary, God Help the seminarians.[/quote]

Only ordained ministers can be Chaplins.

And all of those degrees pay terribly. Please please please consider this when majoring in Theology.

One of the cantors at our parish is a chaplain at the hospital and prison. She isn't a priest. We have a consecrated virgin here who is also a hospital chaplain. Works a lot in oncology. She also teaches at my seminary. Neither give anointing or other sacraments obviously, but provide very needed spiritual comfort in an area of extreme priest shortage, freeing up a lot of time for the few priests who can come to the hospital to do anointing.

I wish that were the case here, but doesn't seem to be. I'd like to read up on the documentation for that, though, so I know what to refer to in a discussion if/when it arises.

I could have gone to USF, but I didn't want to study garbage, I wanted to study theology.

For me as an Eastern Christian all Western theology programs are deficient, but that is life. You make the best of what you can get, and hopefully grow in the process.
