I don't mind snakes. They're cute.

I beg to differ.
I once picked up handfuls of baby coppers to give to my mum, all the pretty wiggly worms. And spent an afternoon on a ledge with a rattler til the sun went in and he got cold and crawled away.

Its not the snakes you can see that you should be afraid of. Its the ones you don't see.
I live in a very rural area so I've whenever I'm outside doing anything I always pay close attention to where I"m putting my hands and feet.
I saw a coral snake here once as well. I was very impressed. I probably could've picked that one up, but didn't.

As far as I know, there's only garters and rattlers in Alberta.
...and the rattlers are only in the Badlands, as far as I know.

We have copperheads, cottonmouths, coral snakes, and several kinds of rattlesnakes.
The most common are copperheads and cottonmouths.
Of the two I only really worry about cottonmouths. They're very agressive. Whereas a copperhead will retreat a cottonmouth will chase you. Besides that they're ugly and they stink.

By and large our rattlers aren't too dangerous. Just don't go hiking through brush, and if you have to, wear thick boots and long pants.

Then if you hear a rattle, get the hell away. :)

Luckily people don't tend to hang around in the Badlands a lot anyway. It's a desert. :P (I think literally)
