Walking down to the waterfront, the wind whips my hoodie and I can see the whitecaps on the water. They look like pieces of whipped cream on top of a dark blue that could almost be imagined as chocolate. It’s going to be a fun day. Once I get on the pier, heading out to the sailing center, a new kind of cold hits me. It was cold up near all the buildings, but being on the water adds something to it. It feels so good to get inside and begin to get warm after the long walk down the hill. I silently begin to layer up. First comes a pair of Under Armor leggings, the thick ones. Then comes a synthetic top. I wish it was heavier than it is. Jake comes in and turns on some music. Good, that’ll help get us pumped up and psyched for the torture we’re about to put ourselves through. We don’t say anything to eachother, wrapped in our own thoughts. After the base layer comes a Patagonia mid-layer. Good stuff, worth every penny. Next is the socks. Gore-Tex socks over thick wool ones, waterproof over insulation. Then comes the big piece, the drysuit. I struggle to get my feet through the latex ankle seals. It’s a tight fit with my two pairs of socks. After I get my feet through, I pull on my dinghy boots and strap the outer seals over them. I shove my head and arms through the appropriate seals, and struggle to get the zipper done. Once I’m all sealed up, it’s time to get the excess air out, so I pull open the neck seal and crouch down. The air is forced past my ears with a gentle hiss. I pull my lifejacket on, then a warm hat and sunglasses. Because my watch won’t fit over my drysuit, I attach it to my shoulder strap. Now I’m set to take anything. No water can get past the drysuit, and the lifejacket will give me plenty of flotation if I go in the drink. Ready to rock and roll.

More to come.... maybe.

I know. Trust me. But it's a heckuva lot more fun to go sailing.

Then you're right. :) Thankfully I can swim like a fish and the only thing I'm afraid of with regards to water is that I sail in the 7th most polluted river in the US. lol

I'd be less afraid of grizzly bears than I would being in a boat in the open water. Grizzly bears I can shoot.

Grizzly bears are so cool! I've seen a couple of em' up in the woods in Montana and Wyoming, and they're pretty neato.

Yeah but only if they have good reason to. Trick is not to give them good reason to.

I think it's a mistake to ascribe reasonableness to any animal. They are not reasonable by definition. They don't need "good reasons" to do anything.
