The Pope is probably yelling from his office, "Who turned out my lights! I'm writing an Encyclical in here!" :topsy:

I like it better with no lights on then you can see the stars!

Lots of people in the city never even see the stars or milky way before....that's sad

Have to agree with ApothLights are often used for decorative, aesthetic affect.

The buildings and monuments with the lights off look.... abandoned.

Altough I will admit that the mass turning off of lights would save the accumulative total of BILLIONS of Bill payer's money in America Alone. Providing a sizeable portion of businnesses and people turned off the lights. but outside of saving money I could care bloody well less about this.

Bad hour to be the owner of power plants.

OH! That's what it was! My parents and I went to St. Peter's last night, and they were disappointed that they didn't get to see it lit up again before they left this morning....

Not to mention that the effect (at least in 2008, maybe the power plants were more prepared this year?) is to cause the plants in areas that participated widely to overload and have to shut down.

And it takes days to start back up.

The worst possible thing you can do for the power grid is switch everything (either off or on) suddenly. If people all over an area want to take turns shutting off the power, that would be useful. But everyone at once? Useless at best, and most likely harmful. This whole earth hour idea is based on a false understanding of how the electrical generation system works.
