Nihil Obstat
At my church, there is what I think is probably a copy of an icon. I don't know for sure, but that's what I think it is, since it doesn't really have a place of reverence or anything. That got me thinking, is there anything at all special about a copy of an icon, or is it just a religious piece of art at that point?
Thy Geekdom Come
A copy of an icon of course is not quite as special as a genuine icon. They are generally not reproduced prayerfully and they are certainly not a unique expression of prayer. However, I have several replicas of icons and feel that while it's not the same as having a real icon, it does allow more people to meditate on God through that particular image, and for that reason, it does have spiritual value. There are probably others, however, who feel that icons should never be duplicated. I know this isn't a complete answer. Unfortunately, I know much less about icons than I should. God bless, Micah
