Theologian in Training
This thread misses a vital point, while the Church Fathers had a lot of excellent things to say, and I quote from them rather frequently, they were, at the same time, talking to a much different generation, a generation that knew what sin was and where some of them knew that homily could lead to their death. They are meant to be models to follow, not words to pawn off as our own. The words are timeless, to be sure, but the Holy Spirit acts differently in each person. How one Church Father said something differed from how the other did, because there was a uniqueness in their voice, their approach and their lives, the Holy Spirit worked with, in and through that, which is why St. Augustine was not St. John Chrysostom, and though their messages were, indeed, similar, their words were not. Besides, some of the language that they used would not be understood today and some of their approaches would not be relevant and many would not have the patience to stay for an hour homily. The idealism is nice, but its the reality that you have to accept God bless Fr. Brian (who writes his own homilies http://lordifyouwill.blogspot.com/ )
