That's why I sent postcards. It was a way of sending pictures without sending pictures. The only thing besides mail that we were allowed to send him was the space pen, and we had to have permission. He was in boot camp on his 18th birthday, so they made an exception. Some of it depends on where you go too. Navy bootcamp is in pretty old buildings, so they have vermin issues if the kids get food. They also didn't want him to have anything that could get stolen because that can be a real problem. He was allowed a watch, and that's it. I bought him a Casio mudman so he never had to worry about taking it off, so no one could steal it. They didn't let him keep the four way military cross even though they were supposed to. He made me wear it for him to keep him safe. Even after boot, when he could wear anything he wanted to, he made me keep it on for him. He said he knew that I wouldn't forget to pray for him everytime it jingled. It jingled a bunch when he was in the Middle East.

My daughter was allowed to take her cell phone so she did call once or twice on weekends during basic. Her letters were written in the dark as well so sometimes hard to read.
